Hand Unload….ugggh

Not that WE have to do the work but this takes a while.  At least the weather is nice in Moses Lake Washington.  Insulation for a new BMW carbon fiber plant.  Filled every last square inch of the trailer.

Oops

This is what happens when your brakes freeze up from the cold.  Took an hour to heat them with an industrial heater until they released and then we could see the tire damage.  Two trailer tires being replaced now.  It is always an adventure out here.

Little Mistake = Big Money

It does not take much to make a mistake out here.  Ditch is drifted over with snow.  Luckily he is a company driver so someone else is paying the towing bill.

Shut Down in Illinois

Well, it does not happen often but the weather has stopped us for a bit.  I think we are nearing the Southern end of the storm so I will watch the radar and get moving if we can.  We are only 189 miles to our three deliveries in Clarksville TN so I would like to make it.  Probably take a nap and see what develops.  You know it is bad when all of the restaurants and Walmart are closed at 8 PM.  Illinois pulled all of their snowplows off the road for, get this, “safety”.  Pretty funny really.  We were in near white out conditions and two idiots stopped in the middle of the freeway blocking both lanes.  A bit scary.

We have three drops in Clarksville and then one in Anniston Alabama.  We have time so no need to risk anything.

The truck is running AWESOME!

Happy New Year 2014

Hoping 2014 brings us all good things. It has been another awesome year. Not sure where the heck it went but love starting with a clean slate. Craig and I are still in Seattle and having a blast with family. Learned to play canasta and I may now be addicted. Our truck is having a couple things fixed and we will be out of here on Friday.
I was thinking back over this back year and I think we are truly blessed. We really get to do so many fun things. Visiting friends and family, finding new places to eat, see this amazing country and we get paid to do it. We get to go to every family event no matter where it is. This past year we got to spend time with every family member at least once. How cool is that.
My resolution this year is to write more on the blog. There are times I just forget so that is my resolution for the year.
I hope everyone had a safe and Happy New Year.

As We End Another Year

Even with all the truck problems we have been so blessed this year.  The friends we have made and the friends we have kept along with our awesome family are just more than we deserve.  Our kids are doing so well and there is no blessing in life greater than that.  In order by age, Jason is the oldest and has had an amazing year.  He finished his masters degree while working full time and having his third child with his wonderful wife and partner Anna.  Our grandkids are healthy, happy and they have great parents.  That, combined with the fact we now live 5 miles away makes for a pretty awesome situation.  Josh is still living in New Jersey but is contemplating moving to either Seattle or Chattanooga. I am sure you know what we hope for.  Tyler graduated from college a year ago and has a video editing job he loves.  He hates his commute but it IS Los Angeles.  So proud of that boy and a joy to be around.  Aleena has sold everything and is following her lifelong dream of living in the UK.  She will be arriving in Chattanooga in mid January and staying with us for a few weeks until her work visa comes in and then moving to London.  So excited for her and so proud she is making this dream come true.  CJ is doing great in college, he has settled (we think) on a sociology degree with a major in criminal justice.  Football is going great.  He is a red shirt freshman with three years of eligibility left and is now #2 on the depth chart at quarterback.  Shelby is with us in Chattanooga and is now working for Farm2Fleet, the company we are leased on to.  She is kicking ass and doing so well.  Cannot express how proud we are of the work she is doing.

We ran a bunch of UPS Christmas loads and got paid pretty well, we then grabbed a load to San Diego to get us to SoCal for Christmas with Anne’s family.  On the way we, as planned, stopped in Albuquerque to see our son CJ and the Colorado State Rams beat Washington State U in the New Mexico Bowl.  We stayed at the Marriott which is the team hotel and got a chance to spend a lot of time with the boy.  It was such a fun weekend and probably the best bowl game of the year.  More importantly, time with my Son is very precious.  Headed out on Sunday to San Diego, delivered on Monday morning and it was Christmas-time.  We had a wonderful time in San Marino at Anne’s brothers house.  We just love these people.  Eric and Sarah are just plain wonderful people and their now mostly grown kids are a joy to be around.  We also enjoyed time with Anne’s Mother, her Father and Stepmother.  Tyler of course joined us also and seeing him twice in a month was pretty freaking sweet.  The day after Christmas, we stopped and spent the evening with our friends Steve and Lupe and then picked up a load to Seattle.  My parents have Christmas the weekend after Christmas so all of the kids and grandkids can make it without conflicting.  It is Saturday, we got in this morning and Christmas #2 is tomorrow.  God I love this job.  I think of how blessed we are to get to regularly see our parents, our siblings, our kids, our grandkids and our friends.  It just really does not get any better than this in life.

We are having a few fault codes popping up on the truck so I am going to deliver the load in Arlington on Monday, which is 20 miles away and I then have an appointment at the Kenworth dealer to have a look at the truck computer.  I do not expect any large issues and suspect it is a bad sensor or connection.  We will see.

Merry Christmas everyone and please have a wonderful 2014

Gratitude

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving in Chattanooga. Craig cooked dinner over at Anna and Jason’s house. Tyler was in town from Los Angeles. His first visit to the new house. I definitely think he will be back very soon. Katie came up from Atlanta and then we had Bill and Lauren Hood, Kathleen and Azariah and their girls. All in all it was a total blast. Note to self for next year. Don’t drink Fireball. That is all I am going to say on that subject LOL. Our truck is finally finished. We did have a couple issues when we first got it out but it seems to be working super well now. Just keeping my fingers crossed. We just finished a load from Memphis to Kansas to Los Angeles to Houston and back to Memphis. Truck ran wonderful and fuel mileage was amazing compared to the old truck. Totally hoping we are over our major truck issues for awhile.
We ran into some bad weather in Arkansas. We hit that lovely ice storm. Drove slow and steady and made is safely back to Memphis. Major accidents and just wish people would slow down in weather like that. We sat in Memphis overnight and are now heading to Oklahoma City and back to Memphis. Nice to be running and even nicer to be back in our truck. I love our truck I must say. Lil Bit seems to be happy too. Now if we can just keep rolling life will be great. Life is pretty darn awesome already. But having some money will be nice LOL

Not a Great Re-start

LOL, wow what a sucky day.  There was a reason we wanted to run a short run to get started.  Had a great round trip 350 miles each way that was paying GREAT Wednesday.  Got in the truck at 4 am to get it set up again.  after about a half hour it started idling a bit rough.  At 4:45 I pulled out and immediately got a fault code and could barely keep it running.  We were only about 1/2 mile down the road from the dealer so we limped down and waited until 06:30 when they opened.  They pulled the truck in and opened the hood..Problem was pretty obvious. A bunch of black ooze clogging the fuel filter.  Sitting for two months was a bit too much.  Replaced the filter and bought a second.  Got a couple of jugs and filled one with diesel (you have to prime the filter with fuel when you change it).  I was now set to swap the filters myself.  I am going to go through a few filters until we get all the crap out of the tanks.  Now 3 hours late.  We had released the load so we called the broker and asked if still available.  Yep, head on up.  We get there and they load us very quickly.  I asked if they were going to be open for our return load (this is the day before Thanksgiving) and they drop the bomb, we are not getting the return load.  Love how they waited until I was loaded.  So now we are going to Greenville SC with no load back for the holiday.  I call the broker and call into the office.  Worst case is we have to drive home empty 250 miles.  Not going to make any money but home for Thanksgiving.

So, since we are going to be empty we decide that Anne can go home when we go back through Chattanooga to get ready for the holiday  I changed the fuel filter and drop Anne off and I hit rush hour traffic in Atlanta.  I get a call from Farm2Fleet and they found me a load back to Chattanooga that will deliver on Friday morning.  Perfect, we are making money today again…………

Not so fast,

Just as I get to I-85 I am crawling along at about 5 mph and all of a sudden big clouds of steam from under the hood.  I pull over and the upper radiator hose is split.  I cannot catch a break!  I start calling around for road service, finally settled on Goodyear and they said they would be to me within 90 minutes.  My delivery has to be made by 11 PM and my pickup to head home is 100 miles further that closes at 10 but they said they will wait until 11.   So if I can gt fixed within 2 hours I can make this all work.  3 hours later I am still trying to find out where they are.  My load home is now dead as there is no way I can get there in time.  4 1/2 of the coldest hours I have ever spent and the guy finally shows up.  It is 18 degrees in Atlanta and I only have a light jacket.  By the time I am fixed $422 later it is too late to make this delivery also.  Call the broker again and they give me a delivery appointment of 11:35 PM on Saturday.  Totally sucks.  Turn around and head home.  A day where I thought we were going to clear $1,600 ended up costing me about $1,000.  Pretty brutal.  Well, we wanted a shake down cruise so I guess we got one.

Thanksgiving was amazing with lots of family and friends.  Going to make that delivery Saturday night and then after a fun weekend we are heading out on a 4500 mile trip on Monday.  Very ready to get the wheels turning.

Even I had a hard time finding the positive over these last two months.  Just hope all the drama is behind us.  We need some worry free loads to climb out of this hole we dug.  Constantly amazed by the loving Farm2Fleet family, cannot tell you how much it means to know you are in the right place with the right people.
