Rolling

OK, five tigers, one lion, six wolves, one evil raccoon (named Hannibal) and one bobcat.  We are loaded and rolling to Oklahoma.  2020 miles and we need to stop every four hours to care for the animals (Dannys job) What an amazing crew.  Please pray for a safe, uneventful trip.

Just a quick update.  We are at the Animal Preserve and are in the process of loading.  Very honored to be included in this process.  Two quick videos of the start of the process.  More to come.  Oh, and Anne just touched a Lions face (he was sleeping) she is very impressed with herself.

The Team Tiger Story So Far

So, we arrived in Chattanooga on Friday afternoon with a recurring problem on the truck.  It kept going into “Regen” mode and was now smoking badly.  We were going to try to run over the weekend and put the truck into the shop on Monday or Tuesday but we were now getting computer warnings so it was time to shut it down.  The dealer told us they would get the truck into the shop to identify the problem on Friday but nope, I went by on Saturday afternoon and it had not moved.

At Farm2Fleet, we book our own loads using web based load boards and through relationships we develop with brokers.  On Friday afternoon we received an email from Aaron, another driver at F2F with a forwarded message from a broker he works with.  It said.

Let me know if you have a team available for this adventure! Your truck will need to be at the shipping point on July 21st.

CALL FOR DETAILS

Well, an email firestorm began at F2F with everybody chipping in.  When Jess responded “Sounds like a job for team Leonard :)” We knew we had to give it a shot.  With the truck in the shop I was hesitant to commit to anything but we had a week to get to Maine so I called the broker on Saturday morning and left a message that if the load was available we would love to discuss.  This was a “Power Only” Load which means just the tractor.  Since we were in Chattanooga, I could leave our trailer there and, even though it was a long shot to get the load, I started looking for “power only” loads to Maine.

We had an awesome weekend with the kids and grandkids and spent a great afternoon on the boat with Bill and Lauren (owners of Farm2Fleet)  To say that the pressure from them and everyone else in the F2F family to get this tiger load was intense would be an understatement.  I try to call the broker again on Monday and get voice mail.  I again leave a message but he does not respond all day.  I tell Bill and Lauren that night that I am sure the Tiger load was gone or he would have returned my call.

Cue Tuesday….life gets a bit exciting
about 10 Am I get a call from the broker.  He says they have the load covered…kinda….and he is looking for a backup plan.  It seems they had been talking to the reality TV show “Shipping Wars” and they wanted to do it but it was looking like the deal was going sideways and may not happen.  He would call me back in a few hours either way.  He gave a little background on the load that this was a mixed load of exotic animals including tigers, wolves, lynx and more and that they needed to be rescued or they were going to be destroyed.  I asked what they were offering to pay and he quoted me a price and said it was from donations and if I needed more he could probably get it.  I told him that even though the rate was a bit low we would do it for that as we believed in what they were doing.  I also found out that it was a round trip since the trailer we needed was in Oklahoma so we needed to get there by Thursday so we could haul it to Maine by Sunday.  I tell Bill and Lauren that the deal may happen and the excitement level rises.  A few hours later the phone rings and the broker says “Are you ready for an adventure?”  Heck Yeah!

The office receives the confirmation and we sign it and send it back.  The truck will be fixed by Wednesday morning so I find a load to Oklahoma on Wednesday and book it.  We can drop our trailer at the zoo when we pick up theirs.  I start doing my research on the project.  It is being run by the United States Zoological Association and I found this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWeKHdjGG80

Just as the excitement to be doing this hit a fever pitch I got a call from the broker.  His story was that it seems the Shipping Wars people had approached the zoo directly and cut the broker out of the deal so that cut us out also.  I was depressed and a bit pissed about the whole thing but there was nothing I could do.  I sat at the computer and went to the Zoo’s website and clicked on the “Contact Us” button and sent a message.  I do not remember exactly what I said but it was pretty direct.  I know I said I was dismayed that they would trust these animals to the people on Shipping Wars and asked if they had ever seen the show (lol)  I said we were very disappointed that we were not involved and I told them I would be praying that everything worked out for the animals.  As I was typing Anne said “Are you sure you want to do this?”  I told her something was screwy and I was not comfortable that the broker was telling the truth.  (A broker lie??? crazy)

Five minutes later I got an email from the zoo.  “Craig, we need you to do this, call me ###-###-####”

I called Joe and I am still confused on exactly what happened and what the whole story was but everyone had been jacking them around and he just needed these animals rescued.  He would have the donor pay us directly.  I told him it would be best if we just went through the broker but he said he had received a text message from the broker that said his boss was pulling the plug on the deal.  I told him we would do the load for the amount I had agreed to with the broker and that would save them the commission costs.  I put Joe in touch with Farm2Fleet management and they did the paperwork.  A little plug for our company here.  When we met Bill and Lauren for dinner that night, they told us that they were donating Farm2Fleet’s portion of the revenue back to the zoo to help the animals (and doing it in the companies and our name) and they were going to start rounding up supporters for this cause.  We LOVE these people.

The next morning we got our truck, grabbed our load to Oklahoma and made the delivery Thursday afternoon.  We headed to the zoo and dropped our trailer.  We then got a private tour of the park.  Wow!  Not only very cool but these animals are loved.  I forgot to mention that since all the shenanigans with the tv people, the airfare rates had more than doubled in a week to get the rescue team to Maine, so Joe asked us if the zookeeper who would be riding back with us to care with the animals could also ride with us up to Maine.  All I asked is that he be clean and Joe said he would hose him off.  Actually to be truthful I asked if he had a gorgeous female zookeeper instead.  It probably worked out for the best anyway.  We met Danny who would be riding with us and he took us to meet the baby tigers.  A once in a lifetime (maybe twice since we are going back to the zoo this week) event.  We hooked to their trailer and loaded up and we were off to Maine.

We are now sitting here near Bar Harbor Maine in a Walmart parking lot.  This is the very glamorous side of trucking.  Danny has been great and we got to take him for his first ever lobster dinner last night.  The rest of the team flies in today and we will be loading up the animals this afternoon.  Still not sure exactly what kind and how many of each but I think we are prepared for anything.  Here are some more pictures.

Team Tiger

So, the full story is still being written but we are working with the G. W. Zoo in Wynnewood Oklahoma to rescue a bunch of exotic animals.  Including 5 tigers, a lion, a bear, 7 wolves, 3 lynx and heaven knows what else.   The numbers keep changing.  I am going to write up the whole adventure but I thought I would post a few pictures and videos as we go.

Farm2Fleet has been awesome.  Totally supportive of this operation and I cannot tell you how much we LOVE running for this company and the owners, Bill and Lauren Hood.

This is, without a doubt, the coolest thing we have done.  I get asked weekly what is the coolest load you have ever hauled.  I now have an answer…….

TIGERS!

Lots of Family Time……..sigh

This is post one of two today.  Lot’s going on.  First let me bring you up to date.

So, we have kind of settled in to a real nice round trip from Chattanooga TN to Seattle WA.  It has worked out awesome for a number of reasons.  We have family at both ends and in the middle (Colorado) so we have gotten to spend lots of time with the kids, my parents and family and our grandkids.  Unfortunately, and fortunately, we have been down a lot as we try to get all the little things fixed on the truck.  We finally got the A/C fixed and then we had an emission problem.  We spent five says with the truck in the shop in Chattanooga and then ran to Washington with the promise we could deliver on Friday (the day after the 4th of July), wrong, stuck for the weekend and then when we got back to Chattanooga, the truck had to go back in the shop for another four days.  All seems to be working well now.  The best part is the part I was most pissed off about, getting stuck over the 4th of July weekend.  God was really watching out for us.  My Mom was out of town visiting my sister in Wisconsin so we were spending a great weekend with my Dad.  Saturday morning he had a small stroke.  If we had not been there I am not sure he even would have gone to the Doctor.  He pretty much fully recovered in 12 hours but he is now under a Doctors care and they have a plan.  Because of this I got to spend about a day and a half with my two brothers and even though the reason we got together sucked, it was pretty awesome.  I also got to spend time with my older sister whom I never get to see enough of.  Dad is doing great and the family is awesome.

On the way back to Chattanooga we were a day ahead of schedule so we stopped in Jackson Tennessee for something I have wanted to do for a long time, catch a Jackson Generals Baseball Game!  Jackson is the AA Affiliate for the Seattle Mariners and a great place to watch baseball.  It was $1 night.  $1 admission, $1 Hot Dogs, $1 drinks, $1 Popcorn….we bought a hat for a friend and spent more on the hat than everything else we spent combined.  Truck smoking so it was back to the shop for the weekend.  We got it back on Tuesday and running great, so time for the next adventure……..

Wow

Nothing to do with trucking or us other than I always knew I was going to be an astronaut until I heard the nickname for the 6 foot astronaut was “Ox”  and I realized I was not going to make the cut.  Just one of the coolest videos I have ever seen.

Weigh Station Etiquette

One of the sites I love is one called CDLLife.  I am going to add a link to their site on the main page.  They had a post on facebook today that I thought was great.  I remember how nervous I was the first time (and every other time) I drove through a scale.  This is just darn good info.  The most important advice I can give is go slow and watch the lights/screens.  Like everything in trucking, too slow is way better than too fast.

Again, this is from www.cdllife.com

We recently asked the CDLLife audience to spill their vast knowledge of weigh station DO’s & DON’Ts. Here’s what our expert drivers had to say:

DO’s

  • Be Respectful
  • Be Patient
  • Be Prepared | Have your paperwork ready.
  • Be Pleasant
  • Roll Down Your Window
  • Keep A Clean Truck & A Clear Dash
  • Pay Attention to Scale Speed Limits
  • Turn Down the Radio
  • Keep 100 feet between yourself and the next truck.
  • Buckle Up
  • Listen and Follow Directions
  • Keep up a neat & tidy appearance.
  • Know the DOT Laws
  • Keep Your Dash Cam On
  • Act like the professional that you are!

DON’Ts

  • Don’t Use Sarcasm. – Regardless of the obvious nature of questions you may need to answer.
  • Don’t Speed Through The Scales
  • Don’t Make Jokes About Illegal Activity
  • Don’t Use Your cellphone or Bluetooth while stopped.
  • Don’t Slam On Your Brakes On The Scales
  • Don’t Smoke / Spit Tobacco In The Scale Area

Here’s one of the best pieces of advice we received from CDLLife community member, Dan Coffey!

We are the proud parents of a 2009 780 Volvo

I wrote this a couple weeks ago and didn’t realize I hadn’t posted it……
The truck is officially ours!! It has been a long week and we won’t be in the truck until Monday. Amazing how long things can take with a truck or a truck dealer for that matter. We thought we were getting the truck yesterday and would have the weekend to put it all together but they didn’t have the correct cable to hook up our inverter. It will be here on Monday and then we can roll. Also the department that takes care of the licensing is only open Mon-Thurs. Who knew. I was getting frustrated but heck what can you do. We did take one car load of stuff and piled it in a corner of the truck. Craig built a couple shelves for the sides and he is putting them in today. Hopefully the smell of the stain will dissipate by Monday 🙂
We are so excited to get running again. But as we have said before in trucking you can’t count on anything LOL. We just changed our CDL to Washington State. Our licenses were lost in the mail and we have until June 13 to get up there to take another picture before our temporary expires. If its not one thing, Its another for sure. But hey our first run will be 2500 miles. That isn’t a bad thing.

Now to continue……
We LOVE our truck. We have been in it for a couple weeks and are super happy. We did breakdown already. Of course I was driving, ALWAYS when I am driving. We were just inside the South Dakota – Wyoming border. Middle of nowhere to say the least. We had just added towing coverage to our policy so we were thankful. 70 miles we were towed to the Volvo dealer in Rapid City SD. What a great little town. We checked into the hotel and hit the town. As we were heading to the local tavern we got the call that our truck was ready. Couldn’t believe it but we were grateful!! We were only a day behind. Things always work out though. We couldn’t deliver until Monday so we figured we’d spend Father’s Day with Craig’s dad in Snohomish. Enroute we were able to meet up with Craig’s Mom and oldest sister. They were heading to Wisconsin on a road trip and we stopped and had lunch. What a great weekend. Good food, good weather and good family. Craig’s baby brother and family stopped by the house with the nephews and Elvis (their adorable dog) The boys jumped in the pool and Craig had made some ribs. MMMM MMMM good. Father’s Day we spent with Craig’s oldest brother and family. Saw all the nephews and nieces. Baby Trent is getting so big!! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The biggest perk of this job is seeing all the people we love and seeing this amazing country. We have not stopped since. We headed out Tuesday last week and it is Sunday today and we are heading back to Washington to deliver tomorrow. Life is good!

There are angels among us…..

There have been so many changes this past week. Change is scary but boy has it worked out for us. I’m not ready to go into major detail yet but will in the coming week. But I can tell you. There are angels among us. Craig and I have spent the past few days with them all around us. It is amazing how many people are out there that you can touch and can touch you in ways you have no idea. I feel truly blessed to have the most incredible people in our lives and am so excited for what is coming our way. Pay it forward is not just a catch phrase and it is beyond words to describe what has happened to us in the past few days. Truly a miracle. Life is good!!!

Here We Go Again…..

Ahh, the joys of dancing to a different drummer.

Well, we are kinda homeless right now.  Not our actual home but our truck home.  Connie and Steve decided they wanted to move both trucks to a different company.  After much discussion Anne and I decided that where they were going was not where we wanted to be.  Luckily we were in Chattanooga for the holiday weekend since we could not deliver in Atlanta until today (Tuesday)  So we moved all of our stuff out of their truck and into our kids garage until we finalize a plan.  We actually have a number of options and once we decide what we are doing I will be glad to share them with you all.  A final decision will come in the next two days but we are very content with what is happening and think this is going to be a great step forward for us (well, option 3 is kind of treading water but it sets up a great step forward)  It has been a bit frustrating as we had calls from four different brokers today with great loads out of Atlanta.  Oh well, the loads will be there next week also.

Having everything in bins and baskets sure made the move out easy.

I want to say again just how freaking awesome the staff and drivers of Farm2Fleet have been to us.  Whatever happens, this is where our future lies as we really have found a home.

P.S.  Hanging with the Grandkids is AWESOME. I love being around people who think I am as amazing as I think I am.  Oh, Anne says I am amazing but between you and me, I suspect she is patronizing me a bit.

Jackson on the other hand………..
