Key West Continued

So, we had an amazing time in Key West.  We were up in Pennsylvania and there were no loads, I mean no loads available heading South.  Normally we would just follow the money and head somewhere else but this was vacation on the line.  So we just ran empty to Chattanooga and found a load from there to South Florida.  Rates out of Florida looked amazing and that almost never happens.  Usually if we book a load to Florida we demand a round trip rate because there is no freight out of South Florida.  What we have been seeing, however, is a huge shortage of trucks throughout the South and the West Coast.  After delivering we drove to the Flying J in Fort Pierce FL and parked the truck and Bandit (Jim) drove the 60 miles North to pick us up.  We went out for a nice dinner with Sandi and Bandit and headed out for Key West in the morning.  It is about a 4 1/2 hour drive from their house to Mile Marker Zero on Hwy A1A.  Anne had never been to the Key’s so she was in for a treat.

We stopped at The Island Grill, one of my favorite little restaurants in Islamorada on Windley Key to start our vacation.

Then we headed out for Key West.  The drive, if you have never done it, is stunning but long.  We got into Key West and headed straight to our hotel, The Paradise Inn.  Although we were a couple of hours early they had our room ready so we checked in and hit the town.  I picked this little boutique hotel as it looked awesome and was in walking distance to all of the main spots off Duval Street.  It was a VERY touristy kind of day.  We stopped first at Irish Kevin’s, then on to Sloppy Joe’s and Capt Tony’s with a stop at The Hogs Breath, we then hit happy hour at Kelly’s (which was awesome).

We also stopped by the Curry Mansion Inn where Bandit and Sandi got married 15 years ago.  Pretty cool.

From there, things got a little fuzzy and what really happened is a bit in dispute. I do know we ran into Scottty, who is the son of Bandit and Sandi’s old neighbor in St Louis.  Great kid who is doing VERY well as a bartender at Bourbon Street Pub, a very crazy place.  Ended up back at the hotel and a soak in the hot tub before bed.

The next day was more sightseeing with the highlight being we went sailing on a 85′ schooner.  A perfect day for sailing and a ton of fun.  We then got great advice from the crew to stop at Alonzo’s right on the water for their happy hour. Awesome food and great drinks.  We ran into Scotty again here as it is a big hit with the locals.

We stopped by Sloppy Joe’s to refill our Rum Punch coozies and went back to the hotel for a swim and some relaxation.  Bandit and Sandi decided the party was not over and headed back out late while Anne and I had a relaxing evening by the pool.  Let’s just say that Sandi had a very good time and is not very quiet at 3 AM.  lol.

The next morning we walked to a great restaurant (thanks Yelp) for an amazing breakfast.  I highly recommend Blue Heaven for breakfast or brunch.   Huge sandy courtyard under the trees with lots of shade and a great experience.  We then jumped on the trolley to go to the South side of the island for the obligatory picture at the Southernmost Point.  It was then time to pack up and head North.

It was a crazy, fun three days that felt like a week of fun.  We will definitely be back.  We are thinking this needs to be a yearly trip.

Key West Part 1

So I planned a weekend in Key West to celebrate Anne’s birthday.  We went with our good friends Jim and Sandi who now live in South Florida.  I am going to do a post about the whole trip but I thought I wold start with a little slideshow of the oyster shooter.  We had gone sailing and afterwards stopped at a great restaurant next to the harbor for happy hour.  The girls thought this was a good idea.  I don’t do shots……thank God.

Hey! What a great idea!

Enough Time Has Passed

OK, I have waited long enough.  About two years ago we had an interesting experience.

Anne posted a blog sometime in the Spring of 2012 about a great paycheck we received.  Because of just missing the pay cutoff on a 2500 mile load the following paycheck had something like 8700 miles on it.  A couple of days later a “friend” (I use the term loosely) who is also a team driver posted on their blog about “Lying drivers”  and I quote…

“so any Team telling you that they run 7500 to 8000 miles in a week in a company truck are just liars. Do the math…unless you have a truck that runs 75 mph 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, running those kind of miles legally is not possible. Plus even if you drive out your 70 hours of drive time per person per week and you average 65 mph, which doesn’t include, stopping to go to the bathroom, eating or putting fuel in your truck, any type of construction in your path, shift changes, laundry, grocery shopping, loading and unloading, taking a shower or waiting on dispatch to give you your next load, which anyone who drives a truck knows all of these things must happen to make it possible to do your job, can drive a maximum of 9100. But reality is you average your trips at 50 mph. So on average company trucks are governed at 65 mph, but factoring in all of the things above you must do to keep your truck rolling and the people driving it fairly happy, you use the 50 mph rule. So, let’s do the math…50 mph x 140 driving hours (70 hours each) is a MAXIMUM of 7000 miles.”

It was obviously a slam at Anne and her post but clearly she had not understood that Anne was not talking about miles driven in a week but miles paid for.  It took us almost 10 days to drive those miles.  I understand not understanding but did she ask Anne about it?  She knew we read the blog so it was, shall we say, a bit rude.  I also need to point out that the text above was edited.  Her original post had the math all wrong.  Pretty funny.  We decided to shrug it off as we attempt to live positively.  Then about six weeks later I posted something on MY Facebook page that offended this woman.  Looking back what I posted was probably not the nicest thing to say and I ended up deleting it but in my defense, it WAS about Roseanne Barr.  This person felt the need to chastise me on my FB page.  Look, if you do not like what I say, you can hide my updates or unfriend me.  Completely your choice.  I do not, however, have to be scolded on my page.  I decided enough was enough as I never really liked her anyway as her stories of her past did not add up.  ie: you do not close a successful business, you close a failing business and sell a successful one.  I have done both in my past.  Way too negative for me.  So I unfriended her on FB.  This is when it got funny.  Below is the comment she tried to post on our blog.  Since she had never commented before, it had to be approved.  Which I, of course, did not do.

“Wow…I can’t believe you would unfriend me on Facebook for sharing my opinion on how ignorant you truly are….sure does show your true colors.

How sad that you can’t take any criticism…and you call yourself a Christian”

Not only did I laugh my ass off but I have learned in life that the words “and you call yourself a Christian” would never be uttered by someone who understands what it means to have a true relationship with our Lord.  By the way, she also sent another message very similar since that one did not post telling me I needed to “have a long hard look at my sole”  I am just not that flexible.  lol

So after seeing this attempted post, Anne had seen enough and unfriended her on FB also.  Her response (and I am not making this up) was, “I cannot believe you would unfriend me for telling your husband how ignorant he is”

Anyway, it takes all kinds

Don’t be “Claire”

I am a huge Mike Rowe fan.  You know, the guy from “Dirty Jobs” and the voice of “The Deadliest Catch”  I think he is the voice of reason crying in the wilderness regarding jobs in America.  Hard work really is it’s own reward.  Mike testified to a congressional committee again today and you should spend a little time checking it out.

My favorite quote (you may have seen it) from a few months ago but echoed again today.
“We are lending money we don’t have to kids who can’t pay it back to train them for jobs that no longer exist. That’s nuts.”

Mike has started his own foundation called Mike Rowe Works.  He is on Facebook and is always brilliant and always entertaining.  His website is www.mikeroweworks.com and here is a link to Mike’s Facebook Page.

Here is letter Mike received and his response.  His anecdotal story about Claire is pretty amazing too.  Wow!  It speaks volumes about the mind set of youth today and the disconnect with reality.  By “youth” I, of course, mean anyone younger than 48. 🙂

Saturday Mail Call

Hey Mike!

I’ve spent this last year trying to figure out the right career for myself and I still can’t figure out what to do. I have always been a hands on kind of guy and a go-getter. I could never be an office worker. I need change, excitement, and adventure in my life, but where the pay is steady. I grew up in construction and my first job was a restoration project. I love everything outdoors. I play music for extra money. I like trying pretty much everything, but get bored very easily. I want a career that will always keep me happy, but can allow me to have a family and get some time to travel. I figure if anyone knows jobs its you so I was wondering your thoughts on this if you ever get the time! Thank you!

Parker Hall

Hi Parker

My first thought is that you should learn to weld and move to North Dakota. The opportunities are enormous, and as a “hands-on go-getter,” you’re qualified for the work. But after reading your post a second time, it occurs to me that your qualifications are not the reason you can’t find the career you want.

I had drinks last night with a woman I know. Let’s call her Claire. Claire just turned 42. She’s cute, smart, and successful. She’s frustrated though, because she can’t find a man. I listened all evening about how difficult her search has been. About how all the “good ones” were taken. About how her other friends had found their soul-mates, and how it wasn’t fair that she had not.

“Look at me,” she said. “I take care of myself. I’ve put myself out there. Why is this so hard?”

“How about that guy at the end of the bar,” I said. “He keeps looking at you.”
“Not my type.”

“Really? How do you know?”
“I just know.”

“Have you tried a dating site?” I asked.”
“Are you kidding? I would never date someone I met online!”

“Alright. How about a change of scene? Your company has offices all over – maybe try living in another city?”
“What? Leave San Francisco? Never!”

“How about the other side of town? You know, mix it up a little. Visit different places. New museums, new bars, new theaters…?”

She looked at me like I had two heads. “Why the hell would I do that?”

Here’s the thing, Parker. Claire doesn’t really want a man. She wants the “right” man. She wants a soul-mate. Specifically, a soul-mate from her zip code. She assembled this guy in her mind years ago, and now, dammit, she’s tired of waiting!!

I didn’t tell her this, because Claire has the capacity for sudden violence. But it’s true. She complains about being alone, even though her rules have more or less guaranteed she’ll stay that way. She has built a wall between herself and her goal. A wall made of conditions and expectations. Is it possible that you’ve built a similar wall?

Consider your own words. You don’t want a career – you want the “right” career. You need “excitement” and “adventure,” but not at the expense of stability. You want lots of “change” and the “freedom to travel,” but you need the certainty of “steady pay.” You talk about being “easily bored” as though boredom is out of your control. It isn’t. Boredom is a choice. Like tardiness. Or interrupting. It’s one thing to “love the outdoors,” but you take it a step further. You vow to “never” take an office job. You talk about the needs of your family, even though that family doesn’t exist. And finally, you say the career you describe must “always” make you “happy.”

These are my thoughts. You may choose to ignore them and I wouldn’t blame you – especially after being compared to a 42 year old woman who can’t find love. But since you asked…

Stop looking for the “right” career, and start looking for a job. Any job. Forget about what you like. Focus on what’s available. Get yourself hired. Show up early. Stay late. Volunteer for the scut work. Become indispensable. You can always quit later, and be no worse off than you are today. But don’t waste another year looking for a career that doesn’t exist. And most of all, stop worrying about your happiness. Happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs.

Many people today resent the suggestion that they’re in charge of the way the feel. But trust me, Parker. Those people are mistaken. That was a big lesson from Dirty Jobs, and I learned it several hundred times before it stuck. What you do, who you’re with, and how you feel about the world around you, is completely up to you.

Good luck –

Mike

PS. I’m serious about welding and North Dakota. Those guys are writing their own ticket.

PPS Think I should forward this to Claire?

Still Loving Life

We have been so busy and life has been crazy. We really wanted to make it to the Colorado State University Spring Football game to watch our son play.  Colorado sucks for freight and so it is hard to go there and get back out.  Had a brilliant idea and booked a solo load from Atlanta to Fife Washington.  We arrived in Atlanta and made our deliveries and then Anne’s friend Leslie from college picked us up and we headed to a restaurant for dinner.  Our two daughters drove down from Chattanooga to join us and we had a wonderful evening.  Anne went on home with the girls and I went the next morning, Wednesday, to pick up our Washington load.  I left Atlanta and headed to Chattanooga and we parked the truck for a day and a half.  We headed out Thursday evening for Colorado.  Got to Fort Collins Friday afternoon and had a great visit and dinner with my great friends Ron and Michelle (and Kaiya)then off Saturday morning for Football and then lunch with the team and coaches.  We then met our son and Elizabeth, his girlfriend for Sushi.  Easter morning we met them again for a wonderful breakfast.  I miss these two so much and the visit was much needed.  We then headed off to Seattle to make our Monday delivery. The truck has mostly been running awesome but it was in the shop twice this last week.  The first time really hacked me off.  We had a squealing belt so on our way into Seattle we stopped at the TA in North Bend, the mechanic (I use the term loosely) Said we had two bad pulleys.  They ordered the pulleys and we went on to Fife to make our delivery and our pick up and made plans to come back that afternoon to get it fixed.  We got back to the TA about 4:30 and put the truck in the shop.  My parents were waiting for us and we headed into North Bend for dinner.  Awesome time with the parents and we get back to the truck stop.  I ask the mechanic if we are done and he says “well, as much as I can do” he then shows me that the tensioner pulley does not fit and he could not get it on.  The part was $371.  He then says “you can take it with you and maybe someone else can get it on”.  He was very pissed when I explained that no, I was NOT going to take a part for $371 dollars that did not fit my truck.  So the idler pulley they did replace ended up costing me over $500.  A total rip off but not much we could do.  To top it off we still had a squeal but it was different.  I think the belt squeal had masked another noise that seemed to be coming from near the turbo.  The truck ran and we did not seem to have a loss of power so we decided to get the load delivered to Tennessee and go home to get the truck worked on.  We had a really nice run with good but a little windy weather.  Made our first two drops near Nashville and then headed to Knoxville Wednesday night to get close to our last delivery.  We parked at one of our favorite hidden spots behind a strip mall on the West side of town that had a great little restaurant in the parking lot.  The Smokey Mountain Brewery Grill and Bar.  A very nice sports bar with very good food.  Super quiet night and very restful then made the delivery at 8 am and headed the 109 miles to home. Took the truck in and it turns out we had an exhaust leak behind the turbo.  Six hours of labor and a couple of other little things. $1,100 later we are ready to roll again.  We have been having another problem with the oil temperature rising when we go up hills.  We can control it by slowing down but I was suspecting the oil cooler was going bad.  We had it diagnosed  and yep, another $1,700 bill we need to plan for.  Oh, I forgot to mention the $4,400 we just spent for new tires and shocks and the $600 we spent for a broken spring and an alignment.  lol, we sure are getting rich trucking!  That said we are still doing OK.  We have a lot of debt right now as we had to borrow to get the tires and we are still paying off the loan on the engine but we are making it. For Anne’s birthday which was a month ago I am taking her to Key West Florida for a three day weekend with some wonderful friends next week.  As a huge bonus, freight rates into and out of Florida look pretty dang good right now so it should not be a financial hit. It has been a great week with lots of family time and good loads.  Heading off Sunday evening for a couple of round trips up to Pennsylvania before we head down to Florida on Thursday. As usual, life is pretty dang good……….except for the stupid Mariners.

Our son is working on a very important project.  “DRAIN” a documentary on the dropping water levels in the Great Lakes.  If you can, please take a moment to visit this site.  The two minute trailer is fascinating.

“Yelping” Since 2009

One of the ways we make life awesome on the road is making sure we make time to have fun. It really does take planning as you cannot park a 70 foot vehicle just anywhere. When we are going to be stopping for a bit I generally look for a Walmart or other good option that allows truck parking and then we do a google map search. I start with satellite view so I can actually see how we are going to get in and out of a parking space. I then look around for great (or even good) places to eat. If it is football season we are often looking for a sports bar to watch games. Even though we can’t drink it is still fun, especially if you are in the local area of the team that is playing YOUR team this week. I am reminded of a Sunday when we parked at the Pilot in Denham Springs Louisiana. We love this spot as there are a couple of very good restaurants next door including sushi and bbq. There is also a Hooters for sports. We had stopped to watch Anne’s beloved Redskins (they should NEVER give up the name by the way) We are in the bar and Anne is the only person rooting for the redskins in a packed sports bar. She looks at me and says, “wow, I cannot believe how many people are wearing Saints jerseys” (the opponent). I laughed so hard and said “gosh, it is almost like we are in Louisiana” I love her blonde moments.

I also have the advantage when we are traveling of my past experience.  I used to have to travel all over the country working with our salespeople and entertaining clients so I usually have a number of favorite restaurants in a major city.

The tool we use the most to find great food is Yelp.  It is a website and an app for peer reviews of all types of businesses but it is very robust with restaurant reviews.  I joined Yelp in July of 2009 and I use it every day.  I strongly recommend it for anyone looking for new, great places to patronize.  Feel free to friend request me on Yelp.

I am at www.craigcleonard.yelp.com

I am very stingy with five star reviews so if you are near a place I have rated that high, you are crazy not to make it happen.  I mean, it would be worth a rental car or taxi ride.

Spring Training

We spent a fabulous weekend in Phoenix for the last weekend of spring training. We of course were rooting for the Seattle Mariners. Craig’s Dad, Mom, Brother, Sister and Brother in law all came for the weekend. We got there a day early and picked up our rental car. Craig worked his magic and had them upgrade us to a Mustang Convertible. Talk about a fun car. Beautiful weather and great ride.
The games were awesome. We were lucky enough to get great seats again. The entire weekend was a blast. Great company, baseball, food and perfect weather. Spending time with family… Priceless.

Farm2Fleet’s new opportunity

As you know, if you have read this blog, we are leased on to Farm2Fleet. A somewhat small, very fast growing, trucking company out of Chattanooga. We love it here and have no plans to go anywhere else. We did get tempted though. We were presented by another opportunity that almost had us move……to Farm2Fleet.

OK, it does not sound very dramatic but it would have been a big change.  F2F has teamed with Covenant, a very large trucking company out of Chattanooga and we are now running their expedite division, Covenant Solutions.  If we were just starting out as O/O, we would have probably gone this direction.  It takes a lot of the work out of what we are doing as they do all the dispatch.  So no working the load boards to try to find loads and still paid on percentage, not per mile (that is a big deal).  They have a pool of trailers so a lot of drop and hook freight and you run under Covenants authority so you get huge fuel discounts, tire discounts and you can use Covenants shop for repairs at pretty amazing rates.  Best of all you would get all of these huge company benefits and still be dispatched by Farm2Fleet.  Kind of a win-win.

Why did we not move?  Not sure yet if this would be good for teams, we may still go this route in the future.

Bill Hood, owner and founder of Farm2Fleet, just did a quick video about this opportunity so I thought I would post it here.  You may notice that Shelby is the contact he mentions and yes, that is our daughter.  She rocks.  Here is shelby’s email if you have questions.

Annual “King of the Road” survey

I received an email last week from Atlas Van Lines with this information.  Somebody there found our blog and asked us to pass this along.  Pretty good information.  I am posting a link to the full survey, which is pretty cool, under the infographic.

Atlas Van Lines releases an annual survey known as King of the Road. The survey is filled out by Atlas drivers and they answer questions ranging from ‘how life is on the road’ to ‘what is you favorite fast food’ and ‘when you’re not working what do you do”.
