I Need to Clarify

After my Bumpy Roads post I got a call from my Dad worried that life was sucking for us.

NOT TRUE!

Life is pretty freaking awesome.  Although we are not getting the miles or money we want, We are getting the money we NEED.  The bills are being paid and a little bit is going into savings.  The plan, however, was to be able to put away a lot of money into savings every month.  That is the part that is not happening.  The real positive note is that all of the down time is spent with my amazing wife and we really do have a blast together.

Please do not feel sorry for us, we live a charmed and blessed life.  Sorry the last post seemed like I was whining.

Bumpy Roads

Yes, it is amazing how much worse roads feel in a truck than in a car, but that is not the “bumpy roads” I am referring to.

Since we made the move in November to the O/O (Owner Operator) side, things have not gone to plan very often.  The 4500 to 6000 miles a week we were basically guaranteed has not happened.  We have only had a few weeks over 4000 miles.  The company we are leased on to had a contract to haul transmissions from Laredo TX to Wayne MI and we were going to pretty much run that route exclusively.  For the first couple of weeks we got into that loop and then the loads dried up.  We got different reasons from a number of people in the company.  First it was just “the holidays” and then it was “the plant is re-tooling” and then we were told that “the contract ended and the consignee did not want to sign the new contract until the first of the year.”  Then it was “there never was a contract” and then “we are getting it back”.  Two and a half months into 2013 we have made this run a couple of times this year.  It is not coming back.  The problem is that the company was so used to having automatic loads they had no sales effort that I can identify and so they have been scrambling, without much success, to find loads for us.  We have been running mostly solo loads of 400 to 600 miles and then sit……and sit……and sit, for 24 to 36 hours for the next load.  We call to see if they have something for us and the response has become a very bad joke.  They say “we are working on it”  This translates into, “I have not thought about you at all today, I will get to you sometime”.  I have gotten to forcing them to give me some kind of idea on time to the next load so we can enjoy life and not sit in the truck waiting on a load that is not coming.  We can at least get out to a restaurant to eat, go to a movie or a couple of times, we have checked into a hotel.  The big issue with not knowing is that I have to assume we are getting a load so I am rested to drive at night.  So I sleep during the day while Anne is driving and then I am pretty much screwed at night when we are sitting and not moving.  To give you an idea of how bad it has been, I got three Hours of Service resets in the last eight days on the road.  I get a reset on my clock every time I do not go on duty for 34 consecutive hours.  That is pretty horrible.

On top of this, we have been in breakdown status three times in the last couple of weeks.  First we finally got the turbo fixed on the truck in Chattanooga as I mentioned in my last post.  Then, after we came out of breakdown it took them 30 hours for them to find us a load that had been sitting at the terminal for a couple of days.  We ran up to Saint Louis, sat for 30 hours were we got to play with our friends Bandit and Sandi who were on home time.  Headed up to Michigan and straight back down to Laredo TX.  Again we waited for about 36 hours for a load, finally got one to Wisconsin and we were off.  Made it about 350 miles, I was sleeping and Anne calls out to me.  The A/C is not working and the voltage meter is slowly dropping.  I immediately realize we have broken a belt.  I have her pull over and that is what it is.  The brand new serpentine belt that was put on in November is gone.  We are about 45 mile South of the Petro that did the work in November so we drove there.  It is Sunday so they cannot get the belt until tomorrow.  Also, the idler pulley and tensioner pulley are both kind of sticky and hard to turn.  This is likely what broke the belt so I tell them to replace those also.  In the morning they tell  me the parts have to come from Dallas and there will be a $150 delivery fee.  I called Steve (truck owner) and he suggested I call around myself looking for parts.  I called the Peterbilt dealer in Waco about 35 miles South of us.  He had the two pulleys for about $200 less than the Petro was quoting us and would deliver for free if we could wait a couple of hours.  He needed to find a belt.  I said sure.  It turns out they could not find a belt and the GM and Assistant GM at the Petro worked their tails off to find a belt for us.

Now for the cool part of our job.  We use Google latitude to stay in touch with a number of friends who are also drivers.  When we got to the Petro I checked Latitude, I saw that our friends Bandit and Sandi who drive for Celedon were North of Dallas and heading our way.  I called and they stopped and had dinner with us.  As a joke they said “if you are still here on our way back North we can have breakfast.  They kinda lied because it was lunch before they got back and we were still there.  Always great to spend time with those two.

We finally got the whole thing back together and we hit the road in time to hit the evening rush hour in Dallas.  I went to sleep and 92 miles later I here Anne calling me.  The shift lever is blow air out of top and she cannot shift out of low range.  I have her pull into a Love’s Truck Stop and try to take the thing apart to see what is wrong…….let’s just say I was not successful.  However, we are now stuck in only gears 6, 8, 10 and 12.  We called breakdown to report it and then call dispatch to tell them we need the load repowered as we needed to go back to Dallas and cannot haul a load with only four gears.   They said they would send someone our way.  I gave all the details including where we were and that the other truck cannot bring an empty trailer as we needed to bobtail to Dallas.  I called a couple hours later and was told they were having a hard time finding another truck but they would keep working on it.  We went to sleep.  The next morning I called and I was told (yep, you guessed it) “We’re working on it”…..I said “what does that mean”  and they say, “well, where are you?” and “do you need an empty trailer?” (you know, all the information they would really need if they had actually been “working on it”.  A few hours later a very nice solo driver named Sally showed up and grabbed our load.  We limped back to Peterbilt in Dallas and sat all day until about 4 PM when Steve finally called and raised hell with them for not getting us in.  Ten minutes later they pull the truck in and 45 minutes later it is fixed.  We call dispatch and tell them we are ready to roll, they said “we are working on it”  Knowing what this means we headed out to dinner and then went to bed.  24 hours later we finally got a solo load headed to El Paso.  I call Mark, my best friend from high school who lives in El Paso and we make plans for breakfast.  Mark comes and picks us up and we have a gret late breakfast.  We then proceed to sit all day and finally get a preplan for another solo load to Laredo the next morning.  I call Mark and we make plans for dinner.  I finally get to meet Mark’s phantom wife Gail.  Gail works out of town and commutes so we had never met.  Assuming it was not a struggling actress Mark had hired to pretend to be his wife I want to say that Gail is pretty awesome.

We get to Laredo and sit for 36 hours and I get into a big fight with the weekend dispatcher.  I am very slow to anger but this guy is a total prick (yep, I said prick) he said “what do you want” and I said “I want to keep moving and not sit for a day and a half between loads” so he says “yeah, there are things I want I don’t get either”.  Let’s just say the conversation went downhill from there.  Anne is now convinced we are stuck in Laredo for a loooong time.  The next morning I get a call from the same guy, he is now my best friend ever and he thinks we have a serious bromance going.  This has happened because, I am sure, he does not want me calling into his supervisor on Monday to discuss our conversation.   They give us a load that had been sitting at the terminal for 3 days.  Heading to Michigan but it is now Sunday and we are supposed to be going home on Tuesday.  Not wanting to get stuck in Michigan, we have them get us a drop at the yard in Kansas City, we drop the load, drive to Springfield to put the truck in the shop to get some work done on, rent a mini van and drive home.

We are taking a week off in Colorado, having a great time with the two kids that live here and relaxing.  We are planning on staying with our current company for a little longer but there are very cool plans in the works.  I will let you know when I can say more.

I’m Ready For My Closeup Mr DeMille

So we requested time off  in Chattanooga.  We have been trying to get here for over a month and time after time something came up.  Having a great time with my Jason and Anna and our amazing grand kids, Jack and Blythe.  Four and two are just awesome ages and being a confirmed rock star is pretty nice.

So we got in Thursday late afternoon, parked the truck and Jason came and picked us up.  We had been having a pretty rough day communication wise and I am pretty sure Anne was very happy to get more than 10 feet away from me.  I, of course, was thoroughly  enjoying my wife’s company and had no need for a break.  Anna had a big pot of home made chili and cornbread waiting.  Lots of playtime with the kids and a perfect evening including a dance session by the Grand Kids.

Friday morning we had to head back out to the truck and meet a film crew.  Huh???  We had been contacted by a production company that was working on a new show for the Travel Channel.  They found us through this blog.  We spent about five hours filming and it was pretty fun.  Will let you know when we hear when the show will air.  My wife was her usual wonderful self and I just laughed and laughed all morning.  The part that sucked was it was very cold and windy and we were outside almost the whole time.

After we were done we ran the truck to the Peterbilt Dealer in Ringgold Georgia to see if they can figure out why our turbocharger keeps cutting in and out.  Very frustrating and when it is not working we have so little power.  Top speed on the flats is about 50 mph.  It is intermittent and was working again when we dropped it off so we will see.  Since it is not fixed yet, we are with the kids until at least Monday afternoon.

This is our first time off since Christmas so we are enjoying every minute.  We have had a pretty good couple of weeks.  Still not the miles we want but certainly the miles we need.  We had a full day layover last weekend in Saint Louis and our awesome friends Bandit and Sandi (who drive for Celedon) were there for home time.  So we got to hang out with them for pretty much the whole day.  Great to catch up.  We also got a chance to stop at my very favorite BBQ restaurant.  The Salt Lick in Driftwood Texas is simply amazing but there is no way we could park a truck there besides it is way out in the Hill Country South of Austin and on the way to nowhere.  I found out they built a duplicate restaurant in Round Rock Texas which is just North of Austin.  I looked it up on Google Maps and there is a large Minor League Ballpark next door with a massive parking lot.  As long as it is not a game day, we can park there easily.  Anne loved it and we will be back.

We are a bit tired of not getting to go to all the places the rest of our family is located like Los Angeles, Seattle, Wisconsin and Washington DC but the plan is to do this gig for a few more months and then move to a company where we can book our own loads and control where we go.

Gurgle gurgle… it was a death by drowning.

Okay I am going to whine a little. Okay I’m going to whine a lot. The other day we were picking up in the middle of nowhere Illinois. It was a dark and stormy night. Okay it was raining really, really hard and we had been driving on a little two lane road!! Get to the shipper and woo hoo. They have a ladies room. I felt like a drowned rat to say the least. So what happens next I have heard about but this was a first for me. I had my cell phone in my back pocket of my jeans. YUP you know what is coming next. I hear a splash and scream NOOOOO. I was not in time. My phone is one piece and you can’t take the battery out. So needless to say I called the insurance company and they are sending me a new phone. The bad part is I am on day two of NO PHONE. Can I tell you how many times you look at your phone a day. I can’t play games, talk on the phone, text, listen to my audio book. It is really not a nice experience. I have another day or two without my trusty companion. But this really sucks. Okay I’m done whining….. for now.

What a difference a day makes.

Yesterday when I woke up to take the dogs out. It was a whopping 9 degrees and bitterly cold. The day before it was colder than that. We got stuck up in Wayne MI for the weeekend. It snowed the entire time we were there. Not a lot of accumulation and it was very pretty to watch. I just didn’t want to go out in it. My puppies paws get cold and then the start hopping and attacking their pads. I think their little feet get ice up in there. Anyway back to my story.  We did get to meet up with Connie and Steve. It was Connie’s birthday and we got to go shopping and watch the superbowl. That is another blog that I will leave to Craig to tell. We get our load and head out Monday. We got to Wayne on Saturday.  So this morning I wake up in Illinois and get the puppies out. It feels wonderful outside. I am wearing a sweatshirt and I ask Craig wow how warm is it. He laughs and say 32. I busted out laughing. It has been so cold the past two weeks that 32 feels warm.
We are heading to Laredo where the temperature is in the 80’s. I’ll have to dig in the bottom of my clothes to get my summer clothes LOL. I can’t believe how cold this past couple weeks has been. I have no problem admitting I am a total wuss when it comes to being cold. I hate it and am quite vocal about it. (Grin) I am ready for spring!!!!!

UNCLE!!!!

We are driving through Kentucky and heading to Michigan. It is snowing…. AGAIN. The past week has been hellacious with snow and cold. Lets see what the last 4 days have held for us. Snow, freezing rain, black ice, wind, tornadoes, thunderstorms, rain and bitter cold. I am ready for some warm weather. What kills me is about a month ago down in Laredo, where it was 70+ degrees I suggested that I would like some colder weather. Now by colder weather I meant sweatshirt weather. NOT bundle every part of your body so it doesn’t freeze off. Well I got the latter.  It’s funny that we live in Colorado, which doesn’t seem as cold as these other places. It’s that dry cold LOL. IT IS TRUE!!! Give me Colorado cold any day.

Now today is Groundhog Day. My request is that Phil DOES NOT see his shadow. I don’t want 6 more weeks of winter. I need some warm weather!! Now who I feel bad for is Lil Bit and Max. They have no idea what is going on outside until I take them. The past few days the poor babies have had to go out on snow or ice. The days I can find grass is a good day for them. May have to go buy them so more clothes since I left most of their cold clothing at home. They have their sweaters but that is it. I forgot their booties too. Oh well. We shall see what we can find.

This past week we have been running a load that goes from Kentucky to Tennessee back to Kentucky. We have 2 stops along the way. Then the next day we run from Kentucky to Missouri where we have 4 stops and then back to Kentucky. The first few days were horrible. It’s been better but I have totally decided I like OTR (over the road). I like long runs with a pick up  and a drop and no stops in between. On top of the time consummation of all those stops and using up your clock. The paperwork is ridiculous. I have to sign my name, date and trailer number on every piece of paper. Some places about 40. Then I have to sign their copies too. Another 40. Then off to the next stop. Some have 10, 30 and one stop has 2. Love that one. I never though I’d get writers cramp being a truck driver. But it has happened. The part I especially don’t like about this particular route. You have no time to do anything. Trying to figure out when to take a shower, No way can you do any laundry, haven’t had a chance to eat out and basically so exhausted when you finish, off to bed. The part of truck driving that we love. Is the social part. Stopping and having dinner. Meeting new people and seeing this country. On this type of route you don’t have any time for those things. Barely have time to stop for fuel. I am looking forward to getting  back to our old cycle. Run hard, play hard and laugh. Craig is running out of hours so tomorrow we will hopefully be doing a 34 reset and watching football. Steve and Connie will be up in Michigan at the same time so hopefully we can meet up and have some laughs!!

Life is good.

Baby It’s Cold Outside

Michigan is a bit nippy this time of year.  86 degrees and sunny in Laredo so I am whining for a load South.  January has pretty much sucked for miles.  We are doing fine but doing about half the miles we want.  January and February are the slow time of the year for trucking so pretty used to this but we really would like to be doing better.  Mostly running all solo loads, 400 to 600 miles and pretty much one load a day.  We deliver and then sit until the next day.  Having a blast with my wife but we would rather make money and have a blast on a beach somewhere.

Christmas was great.  We spent about two weeks at home.  We flew Anne’s son Tyler into Colorado and had lots of great family time.   We got home and went right out and got our Christmas tree.  It was so nice to get to decorate a tree.  We had a huge pile of Amazon boxes waiting for us that needed to be wrapped.  We basically do all of our gift shopping on Amazon since we have Amazon Prime membership and it includes two day free shipping.  We spent a lot of time with the three kids that were in town.  Christmas Eve dinner is always my Baby Back Ribs and Rosemary Garlic Rolls.  I can confidently say you have never had better ribs than mine.  While home we also took Tyler up to the New Belgium Brewery, home of Fat Tire beer, for their tour which includes an insane amount of free beer. We also headed out East to the Grasslands to go shooting.  It was a blast.

As I said, mostly shorter runs.  We also had a load from Detroit to Chicago that was a bit of a nightmare.  They sent us to this place with no loading dock, in the snow and ice and no way to get around the building.  I tried anyway and got stuck.  After about 90 minutes one of the employees used his Expedition to help pull us out.  It was not his first time doing this.  I finally backed around to the side of the building and they brought out this machine that weighed about 10,000 pounds and was on swivel wheels.  I talked them into breaking it down into two parts and strapped the rolling part down hard.  This should have been a flatbed load and I was very nervous the dang thing was going to break loose and come through the side of the trailer.  We made it however.

One of the things we are trying to do is lower our fuel consumption.  This truck has seven batteries and an isolated starting module so we can start the truck even if all the batteries are completely dead.  So we went out two days ago and bought a small ceramic heater.  We parked last night at about midnight, shut off the truck and turned to little heater on low.  Woke up this morning at 6:30 and we slept great.  Six and a half hour of not idling the truck.  Pretty sweet.  A truck uses just under a gallon an hour idling so assuming we save $3 a hour that just saved 19 dollars.  We paid $15 for the heater so every night after last night is free.

We are currently sitting in a Walmart parking lot in Livonia Michigan.  Anne is going to get her nails done and, if we are still here, we will probably head over to Chili’s tonight to watch Russell Wilson in the Pro Bowl.
