A Pretty Great Month

OK, a whole month between posts.  I have the best of intentions but just been too lazy to do it.

Had a great month really, got to stop in La Quinta CA to have dinner with one of my favorite people on the planet, Shannon.  About time Anne got to meet her and Anne got her sushi fix also.

Two big events in the last month.  First, my amazing daughter Aleena asked me when she was three years old if she could go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.  We made a deal that she could go when she was 21 years old.  When she was 18 I tried to take her to one and she said “not until I am 21”  So for her 21st birthday back in May I told her we were going.  Jimmy does not announce his tour date very far in advance and we needed to plan,  He always plays at the MGM in Las Vegas in October so we decided that was the best bet.  As soon as the dates were announced, I bought the tickets.  We can get there for free by just requesting time off in Vegas and so I bought Aleena an airline ticket from Seattle and figured I better get a hotel booked.  I wanted to stay at the MGM or very close.  Looking at hotels.com we found a pretty amazing rate at, of all places, the Hooters Hotel and Casino literally across the street from the MGM.  I have to tell you, I was really hesitant to stay at Hooters, but the reviews were ok and the price was less than half of the MGM.  It turned out to be a pretty great choice.

So, to get there they had us run a Walmart load from LA to St George UT and then back the 150 miles to Vegas empty.  We found a truck stop on the West side of the freeway near the strip.  The Wild West Truck Stop.  I grabbed a cab and headed to the airport to pick up a rental car, got back and picked up Anne and we headed to the Rio to have dinner and watch the Thursday night NFL game in their sports bar.  This is where Anne discovers video poker.  We had a great time there, headed back to the truck and spent the night in the truck.  On Friday we almost put Anne into shock by taking the puppies to a kennel.  It was the first time she had ever done this but I did a bunch of research and found a neat place.  We picked Aleena up at the airport and checked into the hotel.  It was pretty great.  Nice bright rooms, nice casino, a Hooters restaurant of course but they also have a pretty nice regular restaurant and the pool was awesome.  Friday night we went down to Fremont Street in old downtown and had a blast, great live music and large daiquiris.  Here is a video of the light show if you have not seen it.

So back to the hotel.  Had the prime rib dinner for $9.95 in the Mad Onion at our hotel.  The next morning we headed down to the pool for a few hours.  80 degrees and a nice breeze.  Time to start the rum punches.  After lunch we headed over to Margaritaville at the Flamingo to get Aleena outfitted for the concert.  Bought her a great Hawaiian shirt and some beads, we then headed to the Parrothead Pool Party at the Flamingo.  Had a good time, headed back to our hotel to get the tickets and off to the MGM for a buffet dinner and then the concert.  Jimmy was awesome as usual and Aleena (and Anne, her first parrothead experience also) had a great time.  When we got back to our hotel, I talked Aleena into playing blackjack with me.  She had a great time and lasted a long time at the table. Like I told her “your job is not to win, your job is to lose as slowly as possible”.  It was a lot of fun.  We had a really nice Sunday with Aleena, watched some football, went to pick up the dogs and then dropped her off at the airport.  We then hung out at the Wild West Casino in the sports book, watched more football, I played blackjack and Anne played video poker.  The next morning we still did not have a load so we headed over to the TA to do some laundry.  Pretty cool, they have a small casino so it was time for Anne to learn how to play blackjack.  Just the two of us at the table so a lot of fun.  It turns out that my job while gambling is to make enough money to replace the loses of the women in my life.  We did ok, after covering all of Anne’s and Aleena’s losses I ended up about $350 to the positive.  Not too bad.

The next week we also had a load to Kent Washington and they had no load out for us so I called my Dad, he came and picked us up and we had a full day with him.  One of the coolest things is that my amazing Nephew Aaron and his perfect partner Sarah had their first baby the day before so we got to go by the hospital and meet baby Trent.  God is good.   Had a great breakfast where Aleena joined us.  Pretty cool to see her twice in a week.

Now our big challenge was getting home to vote.  Colorado has early voting so we could go home early but USX would not let us have any more time off in October.  So we got home on Halloween.  Two days off, got to see Shelby and CJ and got our voting done.  So much fun to go with Shelby as she voted for the first time.  We were then supposed to have a load directly to Dallas so we could quit USX and sign back on as contractors.  This turned out not to be an easy goal.  They sent us up to Rawlins Wyoming to get a load from a truck that had broken down heading to Sacramento CA.  Running West we get a message to stop in Winnemucca NV and meet another team and swap loads.  We are now heading to Charlotte NC.  Remind the weekend Fleet Manager that we are supposed to be heading to Dallas and she says “Your regular FM will be in tomorrow and she will repower you to get you to Texas”  So I call the next day and they cannot find us a load so we are heading to the East Coast.

A side note. on the way back East out of Nevada, we stopped right on the border in West Wendover NV.  There is a Pilot Truckstop.  Since we took our refrigerator and microwave out of the truck at home, the new truck has them built in, we need to find places to eat.  We walked across the street to The Red Garter Casino and Hotel to have lunch.  Found out they have a truckers menu where the most expensive meal is $4.95 including drink.  I had a pretty awesome $4.95 prime rib dinner with a soda.  Dinner for the two of us was $12.00 including tip.  We found out they also have free hotel rooms for truckers.  Sounds like a good place for a reset in the future.  Anyway, after getting to Charlotte, they sent us up to a little town near the Virginia border to get a load heading to Calexico CA.  Right past our Irving terminal.  We are told we will drop in Irving and we could then switch out to our new truck.  Get to Irving, no drop number.  We drop the trailer anyway, send a message to our FM and get the keys for the Peterbuilt and check it out.  Getting late so we decide we will do the move in the morning.  Then the phone rings.  They need us to deliver our load to California.  I say no but then find out the load (one whole Cummins Diesel Engine) is for the sister company we are switching over to and the owner of the company is asking us to make the delivery.  No good way out of it so we hook back up and out the gate we go.  As we are leaving we get a pre-assign for a load back from LA to Fort Worth TX.  Two days later we are back in Irving.  We pull into the terminal with four and a half minutes left on my 70 hour clock and 43 minutes left on Anne’s.  We are not going anywhere for 30 plus hours.  We spend pretty much all of Friday getting the paperwork done and then Saturday is moving day.  We hate moving but it is done and we are in the new truck.  Got to see some great friends, Wanda and Dudley at the terminal and Anne’s trainer Carl stopped in to see us also.  No load out Saturday so we spent a second night in the hotel and we are getting ready to head down to Laredo.  Hoping the schedule woks out to stop by the Salt Lick BBQ between San Antonio and Austin.  My favorite BBQ joint in the country.

I feel a bit inadequate

So this guy just walked by us in the restaurant wearing a shirt about three sizes too small.  Anne says “he is trying to make his muscles look bigger……….you should try that”

Always building up my ego.

Lol

We Get Around

I think it is amazing how many people look at our blog, and from all over the world.  We started this blog on December 13th, 2010 as we were finishing CDL school and choosing a company.  I was pretty surprised to learn there was very little practical information available on what we were about to do.  We were going to live in a truck, or as we usually say, a 60 square foot apartment and we had no idea what this would be like.  We could not find any full descriptions of what to expect or advice on how to prepare.  So that was our ultimate goal when we started this, to make it a little easier for others and also to keep in touch with friends and family.

As of today we have had 55,500 visitors to our blog from 53 countries. That is crazy.  I thought it would be kind of cool to list some of the search terms people have used to find our blog and following that I will include a list of the Countries that have visited.  At least I think it is interesting (and some of the search terms are pretty funny)

Search Terms – this is not even close to a complete list.  Just selected.

A whole bunch of variations of our names of course and then…

The wheels on the truck go round and round

The perks.

I just want to write a quick note about the perks of this job. Last night I slept in my own bed. We did a reset in Cheyenne which is only 50 miles from our house. So we went home and had a night and day at home. Woo hoo life is good. Today we were going to go to lunch and a fellow driver and friend happened to be delivering in Loveland. Double woo hoo. We got to have lunch with our daughter, one of her friends and one of our friends. It really is the little things that mean the most. It happens. Sometimes you have to make it happen but it is so cool when it works out. Now I have had my Shelby fix and ready to roll.

Change is a good thing….we hope.

11 Months ago we moved to the reefer (refrigerated) board and for the first six months it was just awesome.  USX had just started a reefer division and our Fleet Manager Phyllis was in charge of it and she is pretty great.  She always keeps you moving and we just never had any complaints.  As the division grew they added a couple more Fleet Managers and then had Phyllis move to Load Planning and we got a new FM.  Nothing horrible happened, it is just we were no longer always moving.  There are a lot of moving pieces in this business and I can just imagine how hard it is to make sure you have a truck with a team at the right location at the right time to fulfill all of the contracts.  Produce is even more complicated.  So what happens is we end up sitting for a day or sometimes more to meet a live load commitment.  Totally sucks but when we had Phyllis, we ran so hard sometimes sitting for a day was awesome and she always made sure we got layover pay without our having to ask.  Over the last few months we have seen more and more disorganization from our Fleet Manager, we even asked for and got a new FM but it did not fix our miles issue.  We don’t mind working hard and being on the road, but we only get paid if the truck is rolling and it has been a long time since we had a 6000 mile week.  I post a lot on a trucking forum and mentioned a couple of days ago on that forum that we were tired of the situation and we were going to leave the reefer board and go back to dry van hauling.  Obviously someone at USX reads those boards because the next morning we get a message from Phyllis that she is now our Fleet Manager again.  Awesome news!  It just may be too late 🙂

When we started this adventure about two years ago, the plan was always to learn the business and then if we believed we could make a go of it, to buy a truck and become Owner/Operators.  We have been talking to a number of companies, including USX about lease programs and investigating the outright purchase of a truck. I feel I understand the business enough now to make a go of it.  What has hurt us is that the last six months or so, our income has fallen off dramatically and expenses have risen.  We had to dip into savings a couple of times and so our cash reserves are not were we wanted them to be when we went O/O.  Never the less, we decided we probably had to make the leap or change companies….or something.

That is when providence reared its gorgeous head.

We have some friends who started driving for USX at the same time we did, in fact, Connie was in our Orientation class in Irving.  They bought a truck about a year ago and after leasing it on to another company, recently leased on to a sister company of US Xpress.  They have decided to buy another truck and asked if we would drive it for them.  Basically we know we will have consistent miles at a higher rate per mile than we are getting now.  We really like this couple so one of the considerations was the whole hang up about working for friends.  Anne and Connie talk (usually multiple times) just about every day. The other main issue was making sure that the biggest perk of this job, seeing family and friends all over the country, would not be impacted since this is a dedicated route running from the Mexican border to the upper Midwest with some runs to California and Atlanta.  After working out the details, we decided last night to make the leap.  Our income should go up pretty dramatically so we intend to be very disciplined about savings for our own truck but we have no timetable.  If this works out as well as it seems, we could do this for quite a while.  The comfort level of still working with USX helps a bit too.  We just won’t be working for USX.   So on November 1st., we will be going down to the Irving Terminal and quitting USX and swapping trucks again to start the new adventure.

So that is that news.  We are currently sitting in Camp Hill PA waiting to pick up our load in an hour heading to Dallas TX.  We had a great dinner last night with Anne’s father in Baltimore at one of our favorite seafood restaurants.  Love that part of the job.  Two weeks to Vegas for the Jimmy Buffett Concert with my 21-year-old daughter.  Life, as usual, is pretty damn good.

Oh, I need to gush about my wife too after her last post.  But I am going to wait so it is not so obvious I am sucking up.   I adore that girl.

Chivalry is alive and well.

I have been thinking about this blog for awhile. I keep meaning to write and then next thing I know it’s my turn to drive…again. When you have two people driving that happens a lot LOL. There are so many things in trucking that in my mind are “men’s” responsibilities. I know that’s not fair  but I am being truthful about how I feel. Doesn’t make it wrong or right but it is the way I think/feel. Sometimes it works out in my favor and sometimes it doesn’t. If I am truthful I will totally admit that my husband definitely mans up in this area. Most of the time. Giggle.

I can’t count how many times I have had to come to the cab and ask for his help. Either because it is something mechanical (which I am not) or just don’t have the strength to do something. I will NEVER put snow chains on and I am not able to put the load bars on. For some reason they don’t like me. There are times I get “THE LOOK” and wish I was able to do it just so I could stick my tongue out behind his back. Remember the part about it not necessarily being right. 😉 He always gets out and gives me a hand. There was one time I refused to ask for his help. I had two other drivers helping me at a fed ex and he was so cute when he found out. Why didn’t you wake me. That pretty much explains my husband. Always there for me.

Last week we had a delivery in New Jersey. I think Craig posted some picture of me looking like I had gone for a swim. I was driving so I had to unhook, and rehook the trailer in the pouring rain. Plus run into the shipping office….. I was a drowned rat to say the least. The final hook up Craig offers to do it. I didn’t let him since I was already wet and made no sense for him to get wet too. But he offered and totally meant it.

This is a team effort but a lot more falls on his shoulders since he is the man. May not be fair but it is the way it is and he accepts it. He always has my back and it is nice to know I’m not out here alone. He is the man who waits for me after finishing his shower so I don’t have to walk back to the truck by myself. I take way longer than he does. He usually does the fueling if he is awake and does  all the HARD work. I do make the bed though which does give me a ton of extra points. But the man holds my hand everywhere we go, holds doors open and always opens my truck door regardless of if I am driving or not. It might be a little thing but it makes me feel like a woman. It also makes me feel loved and taken care of. It’s a rough road out here. But doing it with your best friend makes everyday a joy and I am truly blessed to have Craig in my life.

Sweet Home Wisconsin

This week anyway.  We are at my sisters in Oshkosh for my Niece’s wedding.  Love family time…..also love getting away from family time, lol.

We got to Chicago Tuesday afternoon on a load of Campbells Soup to Kenosha Wisconsin that did not deliver until Wednesday at 2 AM.   Our Fleet Manager sent us a message that after we made our delivery, to take our empty trailer to Milwaukee.  Since we were not scheduled to be in Oshkosh until Thursday evening we asked “are you sending us to home time early?”  Response “not unless you want to come back out early”  Since we were going to wedding, that was not possible.  She told us we would just run local deliveries in Chicago for a couple of days.  Not a fun plan.  Then my phone rang with another Fleet Manager saying he had a solo driver heading East in Wisconsin who was almost out of time and could we swap loads with him, he would make our Kenosha delivery and we would take his load to New Jersey.  YES!  This is about 900 miles each way so a day there and a day back puts us to Thursday for home time.

Torrential downpours through Ohio and Pennsylvania so driving was fun.  it turns out there was an extra stop on this run in Camp Hill PA (the FM left that tidbit of info out) so I got us there and then Anne took over.  This means Anne ends up driving in New Jersey….this is not going to be good.  She has problems driving in New Jersey.

Only two miles from the Consignee, Anne wakes me up and says “I made a wrong turn, I need to back up.  Can you get out and stop traffic?”  This was not said calmly 🙂  I get up and start putting on my shoes.  She had missed a turn and we are on a “NO TRUCKS” road and she needs to back up in rush hour traffic back into the intersection so we can turn left.  Before I can get ready a guy comes running out from a gas station and tells Anne he will stop traffic so she can back.  Awesome people are everywhere.

Five hours to get unloaded, this was a cross dock load that had to be sorted by the guy unloading to go to about 30 different destinations.  We finally got out of there and ran about 30 miles to grab a preloaded trailer heading back to Chicago.  Lots of time so we made a lazy run back, slept for a few hours in the last rest area in Indiana and made our 7 AM delivery.  Went to the terminal and hung for a couple of hours then got sent to the rail yard to pick up a load going to Tomah WI.  That got us to within a 100 miles of Oshkosh and we ran empty to the wedding.

What a great time with my huge, crazy, dysfunctional family.  (I have learned that every family is dysfunctional)  We are here until Tuesday morning so it is party time at Lambeau South (my sisters driveway)   Tailgating for the Packers – Seahawks game on Monday night.  Go SEAHAWKS!!!

Anne already broke the new truck. I want a new one.

Inside the International ProStar….with video

So, they finally caught up to us and has us stop in our Lexington NC Terminal to get a new truck.  We were pretty frustrated about it because we felt we had just broken in our Freightliner Cascadia at 350,000 miles.  They had a 2013 International ProStar+ waiting for us.  It took the shop about five hours to get it in install the inverter and our CB radio.  After all that they said there was something wrong with our radio (the one that was working fine in the morning when I unplugged it from our old truck) and it kept blowing the fuse.  So no CB.  It then took us seven hours to move in.  The truck is a tiny bit smaller but the issue really was it was just set up totally different so storage is a problem.  Anne thought she took a bunch out last time we were home but this bunk has almost no storage under it.  We kind of got our stuff put away after we threw away some bins and then we went to sleep sore and exhausted…after a shower.

We sent a message in the morning saying we were ready to roll and could they PLEASE get us by either our sons home in Chattanooga or our home in Colorado so we could get some stuff out of the truck.  We had to pile stuff on the front seats so we could sleep.  Load assignment comes back to run to Chattanooga empty (about 5 hours away) and pick up a load in Dalton GA Thursday at 11 AM…..perfect.

So we started driving and fell in love with this truck.  It drives so nice, very quiet.  Lots of cubbies for small storage. A/C can make ice cubes. As we were loading the truck, with the door open, Anne had to turn the A/C down because she was too cold. We love the big windows in the sleeper (so does Max) It is very easy and smooth to drive. The bunks are both a couple inches wider. And a BIG deal, front curtains. I was able to mount the storage box on the back so the chains, straps and tools are in there (thank God, no idea what we would have done if that had not worked), the XM radio is also a bit better in this truck.

Negatives: Storage. No room under the bunk. We had four laundry baskets with winter clothes, extra food, etc. under the bunk in the Cascadia, no room in this truck. The refrigerator does not fit on the upper bunk, roof too low. We had to unbolt the lower cabinet on the passenger side and strap it in on its side on the upper bunk and put the refrigerator on the floor. If we owned the truck this would be awesome but we cannot leave the cabinet at home in the event we are ever reseated unexpectedly. No mute switch in back for the rear speakers.  Other than that, no complaints.

Now that we have dropped a few things off, a couple of laundry baskets that were under the bunk, we should be able to finish getting everything in order.

We had dinner with the kids and grandkids last night and then I got to read with Jack and play with Blythe.  We sang some songs and put them to bed, then hung out on the deck with Jason and Anna for a couple of hours.  Wonderful evening.  We need to get back to the terminal early this morning because the “Escape” key on the truck computer is not working so we cannot get to our messages while driving.  Kind of a big deal.  Should get it fixed and then we are off to Phoenix.

Quick little story that I think is a lot funnier than Anne does.  Last week in Ontario CA, I dropped Anne off to get the rental car then she met me at the repair shop for our oil change, she parks out front and comes to find me in the truck.  When she climbs in she tells me she got the “Cutest car and it is awesome……..it looks a lot like a PT Cruiser”  It is a Chevy HHR, one of the ugliest cars ever made.  I say “You got a chick car?”  She then tells me they told her she could pick any car on the lot.

If we ever find that genie in a bottle, I am making the wishes.

Here is a video of the new truck.
