Brutal and emotional week.

This past week has been one of the worst weeks for Craig and I. Our 3 year old Chihuahua Ed had to have major surgery. He was having issues peeing and we thought he might have a urinary infection. Then he was unable to pee and off to River Emergency vet we went. He had 9 stones in his urethra, a pint of fluid in his abdomen and his bladder was distended. He ended up having a urethrostomy. His surgery was supposed to be 1 to 1.5 hours and ended up being 5 hours. He wasn’t doing well under the anesthesia at the start but got him stable. There was a lot of damage from the stones. The surgery went well but it was the longest day of my life. We went to the vet at 8 am and the surgery didn’t end until close to 9pm. I truly didn’t think Ed was going to make it and wasn’t sure how Craig would take it. Craig did not want another dog. He really was angry at me when I brought Ed home but now Craig is head over heels in love with this dog. He is the querkiest dog I have ever owned but has such a great personality and ADORES Craig.

The surgery was a week ago today and things are improving. Ed had to stay in the hospital until Tuesday. They were having a problem controlling his bleeding and we thought he would need a transfusion. He was heavily sedated. I brought him home on Tuesday. He is improving every day but still has a couple weeks of recovery. Yesterday I took him back to the vet because I was concerned he isn’t drinking and was getting dehydrated.  He wasn’t.  I did find out that Ed could be a guard dog anywhere. When the vet came in and tried to touch Ed he turned into a raving lunatic. My jaw dropped open I was so shocked. The vet was like Yup that is the way he acted while with them. I truly couldn’t believe how he was snarling and growling. Now I know why they wanted him sedated so much. He was crazy dog. At home he is just snuggling in our arms or sleeping in his pen. Craig and I owe a huge debt to River Vet. No pun intended but we are truly grateful for the great care they gave Ed and were incredibly patient with all my phone calls.

This weekend Craig Jr is graduating from Colorado State University and Elizabeth’s bridal party. Unfortunately we had to make the decision what to do with Ed. He is a lot of work so we decided that Craig would fly out to Denver and I would stay home with Ed. Totally bummed I am missing the festivities but being as I will see them in a couple weeks at their wedding. The decision was easier. Congratulations Craig and Elizabeth. You will be in my thoughts.

Tomorrow Ed goes in for his check up with his surgeon and hoping for a smooth recovery. They won’t remove the staples for another week and then he is supposed to stay quiet for an additional week. I can’t wait until Ed is back to being Ed. He is so sad to watch but grateful he is on the mend.

Saying Goodbye Is Hard

Well, the insurance company totaled our truck.  The damage to the sleeper is really expensive to fix and it pushed the bill over the edge.  So I had to get to Denver to pick up our trailer and empty all of our stuff out of the truck.  I was not really sure how this was going to happen since it would take us a couple of weeks to get the insurance payout, buy a replacement truck and get it ready to haul loads. Then a friend of mine, who also is leased on to Farm2Fleet, made a joke on Facebook about trying to get me to fly to Seattle and pick up a day cab truck for him that he had bought in an auction and drive it back to Chattanooga.  So I said, heck yeah, I’ll do it.

I flew out to Seattle last Friday, arriving at 11 Am and took a cab to the truck,  everything seemed fine until I put the key in the ignition and found out the batteries were stone cold dead.  Somebody had opened the door a couple of weeks ago and left it open draining the batteries.  After hours of trying to jump start the truck it was determined the batteries needed to be replaced.  Doing this with mobile service is just stupidly expensive and I felt so sorry for Derek (the trucks owner) as the service call ended up costing $1,200 for 4 batteries.  With the new batteries the truck fired right up and I drove up to my parents house to spend the evening and Saturday with them.  My daughters hope chest has also been at my parents for a number of years and this allowed me to strap it to the back of the truck and haul it home.  After a great 36 hours I headed out bobtailing (no trailer) to Denver.  With a day cab, I have no sleeper so I have to stay in hotels each night.  The truck needs some work, there is an exhaust leak that makes it VERY loud, the A/C does not work and just outside of Missoula Montana, the tail lights fell off.   (luckily still attached by the wires) so I got to Missoula just before dark and put the magic duck tape to work.

I got to Denver on Tuesday morning and met my Son at the repair shop to empty out the truck.  It took us about two hours and we got everything loaded into the trailer.  So thankful for this boy.  It was pretty tough saying goodbye to the truck,  We really like this money pit but saying goodbye to my son was pretty easy because I will see him in a couple of weeks for his college graduation from Colorado State.  I headed out through Kansas and decided to go home through Memphis to look at a truck.  We have decided to buy another Volvo 780 as we love the ride, the room and how it drives.  The Volvo dealer in Memphis had two that matched our requirements.  We want 550,000 miles or less, a built in 12 volt refrigerator, I-shift (automatic) transmission and an APU (generator).  I got to Memphis Thursday morning and found what I think is our truck.  It is awesome.  Still working on putting a deal together so I will update soon.  Then I drove the final 300 miles home.  I cannot believe how slowly those 300 miles rolled by.  Got home on Thursday evening and Anne left Thursday Morning for Chicago and a girls weekend in Lake Geneva Wisconsin.  When she gets home on Monday it will have been the longest we have ever been apart.  I am not sure if I or the dogs are having a harder time with her being gone.

My ears should stop ringing from the loud exhaust by Sunday

The Damage

The truck is in the shop in Denver.  They did not actually tow it down from Wyoming until the following Wednesday so that kind of sucked.  I should be getting an update tomorrow on the extent of the repairs and an estimated eta so I can buy an airline ticket to go pick it up.  So, here are a few pictures of the damage to the truck in the daylight.

You can see the trailer damage here also.  Not too bad

We had a wonderful weekend at my parents home in Snohomish.  It was so great to get to spend a couple of days with them.  We also ran up to The Skagit Valley and La Conner Washington for the Tulip Festival.  All of the years I lived in Washington and I had never been.  It was so beautiful and the weather was warm and sunny.  Top down drive in the car and lunch on a waterfront deck.  Not a bad way to spend a Sunday.  We are home in Chattanooga after a fairly grueling drive in the car cross country.  Should be home about two weeks.  Did I mention baseball season has started?  I do not think I am going to be too bored.

Kinda fun

Here is a map of our travels from October 1st through December 31st.  It includes our trip to the Caribbean.

I F%&#ing HATE Wyoming

Or my alternate title “That’s going to leave a mark”

I know I am posting this on April 1st and I just wish it was an April Fools joke. ..it is not.

As I have mentioned before,  this year had been pretty brutal in the Trucking industry.  Volume and rates have been awful.   We have spent a lot of time at home and have used the down time to do a lot of repairs and maintenance on the truck.  We have been fighting a steering issue that we just could not pin down.  Spent money on new springs and bushings,  replaced some u bolts and did a three axle alignment.   Did not fix it.  Finally replaced the entire steering box and it solved the problem.   It turns out most problems can be solved if you throw enough money at it.  Got the truck out of the shop last Thursday.  We posted the truck but with Easter that Sunday we were being very picky.   We refused to go out over a holiday weekend for cheap.  Nothing good popped up so we had an awesome weekend with the kids and grandkids.

Monday morning I found a great paying load from Oklahoma City to Renton Washington.  It was paying more than loads from Atlanta to Seattle and it was picking up on Tuesday.  We booked it and then I found a load from Nashville to Tulsa as a bonus.   So off we went.   So nice to be back on the truck together.   I was happy,  Anne was happy and the dogs were really happy.   We stayed that way almost all day.

Tuesday night at about 10:30 pm we were rolling through Cheyenne Wyoming when it went from raining to 3 inches of snow and near white out conditions in a couple of miles.   I was driving and slowed way down looking for a place to pull over when the truck just started sliding sideways.  We hit the jersey barrier at about a 15 degree angle and bounced back onto the middle of the freeway were we proceeded to jack knife.  Because of the sudden snowstorm,  unbeknownst to me,  Anne had gotten up and was sitting on the edge of the bed to look out at the road.   So she went flying.   She is very sore from a number of bruises but she is fine….physically

image

We have had better days.   There were a bunch of accidents but the tow truck got to us first.  The State Trooper said “Wow, that came out of nowhere,  welcome to Springtime in Wyoming”  The good news is mechanically the truck is fine,  just body damage.  Also the freight was fine because we were going slow when it happened.

We spent the night in a hotel then I rented a car in the morning and we headed down to Fort Collins to stay with my son and his fiance.

The big issue was how to deliver the load?   It was an expedited load to Paccar (Kenworth) that was to deliver Thursday morning.  The other problem  is the broker had arranged for another driver to grab our trailer in Renton and make the delivery since at Paccar, only Peterbilt or Kenworth trucks are allowed on the property.   I guess they don’t want their employees to see a sweet Volvo.

It took us another day but we rented a truck, headed back to Cheyenne and grabbed our trailer and we were off.  Delivery is today and we just rolled through Spokane.  Also Paccar has relented and have given us approval to make the delivery ourselves.

Anne has been an emotional basket case.   We hit a small snowstorm last night near Sheridan WY that would have never phased us before and she kinda lost it.   Way better today.   Part of it is lack of sleep and pain, she has a few big bruises and is moving pretty slowly.

We are making this delivery and then we’ll spend the weekend at my parents before getting a load on Monday back to Denver so we can return the rental truck.   It is WAY too expensive to keep using.   We are then going to go home until the truck is fixed and I will fly back to Denver to pick it up.

We are ok, the truck will be fixed and in a couple of weeks we can start making money again.

Ready For a Change….

In the weather but more importantly, in this market.  Making smart decisions has never been more important.  Avoiding the winter weather has been part of the plan but adjusting to current market conditions has been the biggest change.  Rates just suck.  January and February are the worst months in trucking but this winter has been epic.  Many of the loads we see posted do not even cover the cost to run the truck.  I know exactly what my fixed and variable costs are so we can make smart decisions but it is sometimes hard to turn down even a crappy load since I know what it costs me to NOT move the truck.  Because we are running lean we can afford to be a little picky and it is not all doom and gloom.  We are surviving and that is a lot more than I can say about a lot of owner/operators right now.

Part of the belt tightening has been self inflicted also.  We took an entire month off from December 20th to January 20th while we had all the kids in town for Christmas and Anne has taken some additional time to be with our daughter and our new granddaughter Scarlett.  That means I have been running some solo loads.  Usually not going more than 700 miles from home so only gone 3 to 5 days at a time.  We will then run some team loads to keep the bank account in the black.  We are seeing an uptick in freight volumes so an increase in rates should be coming soon.

Had an awesome amount of family time.  On Feb 13th we offered to watch all 5 of the grandkids so their parents could go out on dates for Valentines day.  We had a blast.  All of the kids made their own pizzas, we then decorated sugar cookies and Anne had art night with the kids.  It was so much fun.  Also, last weekend Anne’s father and step mother came to visit and meet their first great grand daughter.  A perfect weekend.  They live in France half the year so we are planning a visit to see them this fall.

We ran a team load to Las Vegas this week so hanging out in 75 degree weather did not suck and we are currently in Minneapolis MN waiting for our delivery in the morning.  Got to stop over in Fort Collins Colorado yesterday for lunch with our future daughter in law and pedicures.  (yes, I am man enough to get pedicures) We are looking for a load toward home tomorrow as Anne has a Dr appointment Tuesday afternoon.  The plan is then to run hard as a team for the month of March which will include a weekend in Phoenix AZ for a couple of Mariners Spring Training games.  SOOOOO ready for baseball season to start.

I have, unfortunately, been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis.  It totally sucks and the pain is bad but there are a lot of worse things that can happen to a guy so I know that my life is still blessed.  Just a bother having to work in the doctor appointments.

Life is good, the markets are getting better and God loves me.  All in all, we are doing fine.

What a difference a day makes.

6 years ago yesterday I met Craig on a lunch date. It was a very, very long lunch date. We started at lunch which turned into dinner which turned into playing pool and ended after midnight. It’s pretty amazing to think that 6 years ago today my life had changed forever. That one day can make such a difference. It was my last first date as I like to say.

We have gone through ups and downs. Job and no job. Had money and been broke. Laughed, cried, screamed, dreamed and just had a freaking ball most of the time. We truly are best friends and I can’t imagine my life without him in it. He is my rock. I never doubt that he is there for me and always has my back. I realize what an incredible gift that is. To know that he will always be there for me. Anyone that has spent any time with us knows we love to banter. You might call it bicker but we don’t. Boy do we argue. We constantly get in discussions lol. I am quick to let things go which can drive him crazy. He’s not done being mad at me but I make him laugh about something and he has to let it go. Or visa versa. We balance each other which I think is super important. Especially in our profession. One of us is always calm when the other is aggravated. Super helpful when you live in a small space.  We are blessed with an awesome family and have the bestest of friends. We have amazing children and grandchildren!!!

Bottom line is I am grateful beyond belief that I get to spend my life with this man. Looking forward to all the years ahead of us.

I love you Craig Leonard

That's us!

2016 is going to be a great year!

We had an awesome Christmas with most of our kids. Tyler was the first visitor to fly in. He flew into Atlanta during a storm and was diverted to Memphis then Nashville and finally arrived 2 hours late. CJ flew in to Chattanooga following his bowl game in Tuscon and Elizabeth flew in on New Years Eve. We had Jason, Anna plus the grandkids, Tyler, Aleena, CJ, Chad, Shelby, and Elizabeth.  Love having family over!!  Craig cooked his famous ribs, Grandma’s beans, mash potatoes, ham and a turkey. Our refrigerator was overflowing to say the least.

Family Picture 1.2.2016

We spent a quiet New Years Eve playing games and we all crashed before midnight. Party animals that we are. It was really nice and no hangover made it better. Saturday we had Shelby’s baby shower that turned out beautifully. Good food and great people. Missed the ones that weren’t here in person. Aleena, Elizabeth and I did a casting of Shelby’s belly that was so cool! It was a little messy and there was lots of laughter!!!

Craig is chomping at the bit to hit the road. We put the truck in the shop when we first hit town and had a bunch of little things fixed and a couple big ones. We got a new bumper and I am so excited about that. But we have a little problem heading out this month. Shelby is 8.5 months pregnant and having contractions. Nothing serious yet but we want to stay close in case. If baby Scarlett hasn’t made an appearance by Jan 23th Shelby will be induced. Love spending time with the grandchildren we already have too!!

This weekend we had  a wedding. Chad and Shelby got married and we were super excited. Wish the weather cooperated but it was freaking cold and we did it outside. Jason married them which I think is so cool. When Craig and I got married, Shelby said she hoped when she got married, that Jason would marry her. She got her wish.

In 2016 we have one grandchild being born, two children getting married and who knows how many other incredible happenings. We are blessed to have the life we do!!! I hope everyone else’s 2016 has started out as wonderful as ours.

Still Alive and Kicking

It has been a while. This year has been a very difficult year in trucking.  The economy, to put it bluntly, sucks.  Anne and I are doing fine and have survived this very down market.  As an example, last year when I did a search for loads within 130 miles of Chattanooga (includes Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville and Birmingham) on a Monday morning at 8:00 AM there would be anywhere from 3,000 to 3,500 loads available.  Throughout the summer and fall we saw on average about 700 to 800 loads in that same search.  Rates have reflected the total lack of freight.  We know a number of people who have gone bankrupt and new truck sales have plummeted.  All that said, we made it through the ugly market and Christmas season is upon us.  We committed to run Amazon loads coast to coast from Thanksgiving until Christmas and we are actually working hard for the first time in a long time.

We took our first real vacation (more than a long weekend) ever.  I know we are always goofing off but that is three days here and four days there and usually spontaneous.  This was different.  In October we flew to San Juan Puerto Rico for a few days and then took a seven day cruise to the Southern Caribbean.  We learned that we are really not cruise people.  We just felt that although we went to some awesome places we never really saw the culture or met the people.  We had a marvelous time but the vacation would have been better if we had just spent 10 days in Puerto Rico.  We fell in love with the place and we are definitely going back.  We also visited St Maarten, Antigua, St Kitts, St Lucia and Barbados.  Highlight of the trip was swimming with the Sting Rays in Antigua.

Swimming with the Sting Rays

Swimming with the Sting Rays

I am made for summer so coming home from the Caribbean was not easy.  We have spent a lot of time at home in this market as I would rather be sitting in my recliner saying no to cheap loads than sitting in my truck doing the same.  I just think it is easier to be picky when you are comfortable.  Being a team has made a big difference as we can wait for team loads that HAVE to deliver on time and demand a fair rate.  I will post again with some details of our loads in the last few weeks.  Just wanted to check in since it has been so long.

A few more pictures from our vacation and one of my son on National TV, THAT was a cool moment.

After not being home for weeks. Shelby comes to pick me up to go out. All she says is nice skirt.
I hope she had as much fun with her baby girl as I have with her.
