Are you ready for some football?!?!

I am. Last weekend we stopped in Colorado for the Rocky Mountain Showdown. Colorado State Univ vs University of Colorado. CJ didn’t get to play but what an exciting game!!! We won. Then we headed to WI for a load and was lucky enough to stop in Oshkosh and spend a night with family. Good food, Good Wine and awesome conversation. We then headed to Kent Wa for our next load. We couldn’t deliver until Friday morning so we stopped in Snohomish and stayed with Craig’s parents. Worked out perfect since Seattle was playing Green Bay on Thursday night. Woot Woot Seattle won. We slept in the truck so we could head out early. Made our delivery and was hoping we could pick up our next load heading to Tn. Nope it won’t be ready till 6pm so we are sitting in a parking lot killing time. We did get the truck organized, vacuumed, cleaned and now Craig is napping. The puppies and I are just watching the world go by.

Thinking about my dad who is in France. Yesterday he had shoulder surgery. I heard he is doing well and hoping to be released tomorrow. Jacqueline is with him but I hate that he is so far away but know he is in good hands. Looking forward to seeing him in Oct when they come back to the states.

We are picking this load up and then swinging by Boise Idaho to see the CSU vs Boise game. Craigs Mom and Dad are meeting us there. We are going to the game and then Myrna is going to go on a road trip with us. Al is going to do some work along the way and will meet up with us in Chattanooga. They haven’t met the newest two great grandchildren so looking forward to that and showing off Chattanooga to them.

Sunday we will be stopping in Fort Collins to have dinner with CJ before his birthday. Also keeping my fingers crossed that my Redskins win this weekend also. We deliver on Tuesday and then spend a couple days with the kids and parents and grandparents and great grandparents. Busy busy week. Coolest part is we have been on a load the entire time. Getting paid to visit with family and watch football. Pretty good life.

Quick stop at home.

We made a quick stop at home. Love being able to sleep in my own bed. We needed to swap trailers. We were having issues with the one we had. We picked up a Fed Ex load in Memphis. They do a trailer inspection and shockingly our trailer didn’t pass. We had low tire pressure in one tire and we had to take it to be fixed and have a receipt for the repairs. Turns out it was just a nail but it delayed us a few hours. We get back to Fed Ex and get the trailer approved. Pull to a dock and something isn’t right. Our trailer is 6 inches higher than the dock. Bizarre. After Craig tried everything. The yard dog lifted the trailer front so they could load it. I think they really needed this load delivered but finally we hit the road. I stop to get the trailer fixed and find the trailer is back to normal. Weird. Make our delivery on time and meet up with Craig’s dad in Hermiston Or. He was working there and we had to drop our trailer to be unloaded. We had a few hours to kill and a Mariners game to watch. Win win for us all. We pick up our empty trailer and head to Fife to pick up our next load heading to Tn. This load has 3 drops and we end up at the final drop. back up to the dock and yup you guessed it. Our trailer is 6 inches too high again. Luckily they were able to unload with no problem and we headed to Chattanooga. Dropped the trailer and picked up a new one. Came home to throw some laundry in and ran out to visit the girls at their new jobs. Shelby is a server at T. Mac and Aleena is working at the Grocery Bar. We also were lucky enough to meet up with some new friends for dinner. A few months ago we met Angie and Bill at a shipper in Cali. We ended up getting their load and they had to wait an extra day. Craig and I felt so bad about this we said we owed them dinner next time we met up. They happen to live in Chattanooga and were in town last night. Their load was picking up at 3am. I love the people you meet driving. Angie is definitely a new friend and look forward to spending more time together.
This weekend is the beginning of football for CJ. We just booked a load to Denver. Then we pick up the next load heading to Wa but since its a holiday weekend. We will go to the game and hang out for a couple days. Love when everything works out according to plan. I like being a paid tourist. Now I just need to get to Cali so I can see Tyler. Or need him to come to Chattanooga.

OK, Really, Enough Goofing Off

I generally cannot take more than three days off before I start to get jumpy and feeling like I am a total slacker.  Anne, however, does not suffer from this affliction and would be happy to take a month off at a time.  We are officially getting close to that.  Oh, we have worked here and there as we move from one vacation spot to the next but that is pretty much it.

Seriously, we took a week off in Seattle to celebrate our anniversary in the San Juan Islands and Victoria BC Canada.  It was amazing and we truly had a wonderful time.  My sister,  who lives in Wisconsin, and her sons were at my parents house when we arrived and that called for a party so everyone showed up for dinner and a pool party.  I just love hanging out with my huge family.   On Sunday we were able to re-connect with Mike and Marilyn Nault, two of our favorite people  and then we headed out to the San Juan Islands on Monday morning.  We started the short vacation on San Juan Island at the beautiful Roche Harbor Resort and then the awesome little town of Friday Harbor.

San Juan Island is the site of the “Pig War” where in the mid 1800’s we almost went to war with England over the killing of a pig.

We found a great hangout at a rooftop bar with an amazing view, we then wandered down the street to a seafood place.  Had a great dinner and for dessert……STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING.  The worlds most perfect food and I can never find it.  This totally made my vacation.

The next day we had a great breakfast and then took the ferry over to Vancouver Island Canada to spend some time in Victoria.  A very British City and the Provincial Capitol.  We went to Butchart Gardens which are freaking amazing and had High Tea in the private garden.  Let me tell you, tea is not for wussies.  I cannot believe how much awesome food was served.  We were stuffed.  We stayed right on the Inner Harbor in Victoria and had dinner at the old steamship terminal.  Awesome food and an incredible view.  The next morning we walked all over downtown and then took the water taxi out to Fisherman’s Terminal.  Really a very touristy spot but still fun and great halibut fish and chips and we got to feed the seals that hang out there.  We drove back North to the ferry terminal in Sidney and found a cool patio for afternoon drinks on the water then checked in for our international sailing.  You have to check in at least 90 minutes early so we sat parked with the top down in the car just relaxing for almost two hours.  The ferry arived and it was time to board.  I went to start the car and………nothing.  The dash lights came on but turning the key did not even try to start the car.  The terminal employees were amazing and tried everything.  Jumping the battery did not work and we tried every combination of the security system thinking maybe that was it.  I asked if they could push us onto the ferry so at least we could get the car towed home on the other side but they are not allowed to do this.  The Ferry captain said they had to leave so there we sat.  We called a tow truck and dropped the car at a shop that was closed for the evening and then had to try five hotels before we found one with a room available.  The next morning the shop told us the problem was the starter, they had found a blown fuse and after banging on the starter they got it start a couple of times.  They could not get the starter in today so they left it running and we called a cab to get us over there.  I called the ferry terminal and they said they had saved room for us on the noon sailing.  We got the car, drove to the terminal and everybody was awesome.  I think we were their big excitement for the week.  We kept the engine running and broke a couple of countries laws by leaving the engine running on the ferry also but we made it home.  Of course, ever since then the car has started every time with no problem.

We hung out with my parents until Saturday morning when we picked up our load and headed back to the SouthEast.  We had two drops in Memphis, a drop in Clarksville and a drop in Antioch Tennessee.  We were sure it would take us until Tuesday since the Clarksville location closed at 3:30 but both Memphis drops went very quickly and we put the hammer down and got to Clarksville before 3:00.  WhooHooo, made the last drop and headed home.

Our brand new tires we bought in February are falling apart.  The tire shop (Best One Tires) in Chattanooga will do nothing about them. I took the truck to the spring shop that did the alignment to have them look the truck over and they found a sheared off pin on a spring and a failed shock absorber.   $850 dollars there, $800 for five used tires and a couple of hundred for assorted parts to fix the broken side skirt.  We had the truck ready to go on Friday but nothing great on the load boards.  We decided to not panic and wait for a good load.  Ended up getting a call from a broker for a load picking up Sunday afternoon headed to Tampa Florida for $3.50 a mile.  That will work.  Had the grand kids over for lunch on Saturday then spent the rest of the day in the pool.  Packing up now and heading out.  Do not think we will be back for a few weeks.

Oh, I went swimming with my phone in my pocket…..again.  It still works.  Samsung Galaxy phones rock.

A Ralph….I Mean Rough Week

Oh my goodness have we been sick.  We are actually working for a living right now and not sitting at home.  Got a load of astroturf for the football stadium at Wilsonville Highschool in Oregon.  We had a near disaster at the port of entry in Utah.  As we rolled over the scales, we got the message “Park, Bring Papers”  Usually no big deal.  We had 4 level 3 inspections in the last 18 months (the one where they check you logs and all of the trucks paperwork) and we have always been clean.  We have never even come close to any kind of violation with the exception of not having the right permit the first time we entered Oregon as Owner Operators.  That was a $430 ticket that Anne got reduced to $200 (and Farm2Fleet paid for us)  So as I am gathering my wallet, our permit book, our logs and the bill of lading the DOT officer comes out and looks down both sides of our truck.  We cannot figure out what she is doing but she is gone before I get out.  I walk in and she is waiting at the counter for me.  I ask her what she was looking at and she says it looks like we are too wide.  What????  Because we are hauling rolls of astroturf (just like rolls of carpet) the sides of the trailer are bulging a bit.  This always happens with carpet and we have never had an issue in the past.

Turf Delivery

Turf Delivery

Does that look like a huge issue to you?

Does that look like a huge issue to you?

Or this?

Or this?

So she comes out with a long stick with a string and plumb-bob on the end.  She holds it against one side of the trailer and marks the spot it touches the ground, she then does the same to the other side.  I ask “if we are too wide, how much does the permit cost”  The answer REALLY sucks.  “You cannot buy a permit with this equipment, I will have to shut you down and you will have to get someone out here to unload the trailer and reload it so it does not bulge”.  This will cost thousands of dollars.  We are about 70 miles from Salt Lake City and there is no loading dock here.  They will have to bring a ramp and a forklift.   We are just resigned to our fate at this point and she apologizes and tells me how much she hates this part of her job.  She asks me to hold one end of the tape measure for her.  I feel like I am sharpening the headmans axe for my execution as I hold the darn tape.  I am tempted to cheat a little but I figure that whatever happens, happens and I am brutally honest on the mark.  We are 5″ over width.  After thinking about it for a minutes she says “My boss is going to be pissed but I am going to let you go.  My husband is a trucker”  I don’t think Anne would have minded if I kissed her right then (she was kinda cute) but I restrained myself and we happily got moving before her boss found out.

Four more weigh stations were open before we got to our delivery and we had to go through them all but nobody else stopped us.  We got very good at holding our breath, however.

So we made the delivery in Oregon and got a nice paying load to Monroe WA which is 10 miles from my parents house.  We spent a couple of glorious days in the 80 degree sunshine laying by my parents pool and working on our tans.  Our load back to Tennessee was ready Thursday evening so off we went.  The next morning, Anne came down with a VERY bad case of the flu.  Horrible stomach cramps and…..well, let’s just say not fun in a truck.  Lucky for us we had a lot of extra time in the run as we could not make the forst of our three drops until Monday morning.  I was able to drive my shift, take my ten hour break and drive again so Anne could just stay in bed.  it was mostly a 24 hour bug and although weak, weare pretty sure by the next day she will live.

So we spent Monday getting unloaded at our three stops near Nashville.  I was online looking for a load and rates hve plummeted in the last week.  It is not looking good.  Not at all pleased with what I am finding online, I contact a couple of brokers we have relationships with to see what they have.  Nothing paying good unless it is heading into a black hole for outbound freight.  I post our truck as available on the load board but had just decided to head for home and wait until the rates make it worth our while to come back out.  No sense burning fuel and putting miles on the truck if we are not making money.  Eight minutes after posting the truck my phone rings.  It is a broker we have never dealt with befor and he has a load to Seattle paying $2.29 a mile (after we negotiate a bit).  SOLD. So we pick up the load and head toward Seattle.  The next morning I am not feeling well as I end my shift and I come down with the flu.  Anne is nothing if not a giver.  I am not admitting that I thought she was being kind of a baby when she was sick but OH MY LORD did I hurt.  What a miserable day.  We did not have the extra time on this run so I had to drive that night.  The stomach cramps had ended but I was exhausted.  I drove for a couple of hours, took a 90 minute nap, drove again, napped again.  Not the most productive night but I drove almost 500 miles and kept us on schedule.  We delivered 3 1/2 hours early.  The good news is this broker has this load every day and he loved our service.  A nice run.  We dropped our trailer to be loaded fro Friday evening (tomorrow) and we bobtailed to my parents for a 36 hour break.

We also found the replacement piece for our fairing skirt.  Only cost $300 plus $50 shipping.  That is about half what I expected.  It is waiting for us at home so we will look all pretty again next week.

We will be heading back to Seattle next week to celebrate our anniversary in the San Juan Islands and Victoria BC.  It is going to be awesome.

I need some red duct tape please.

Why does everything happen when I am driving. I am minding my own business. Listening to my audio book in West Virginia and BAM. Freaking boom that scared the bageebies out of me. Look in my side mirror and just see tons of debris. Craig is woken up and I immediately pull over so we can figure out what happened. I know we blew a tire but not sure which one. Of course it had to be a drive tire. The problem with losing the drive tire was we lost part of the side of our truck called the fairing. Now what is the drive tire for those of you that don’t drive. A semi has 18 wheels in total. Your tractor had 10 tires. The two steer tires in front and then 8 drive tires on your tractor. Then 8 tires on your trailer. I’d much rather lose a trailer tire any day, We have lost numerous trailer tires over the years. This was our first drive tire and once we lost a steer tire. The steer tire was the only one that made me want to stop driving. It still scares me when I think about it. But this is part of trucking. Luckily no one was hurt. We were able to get the tire replaced and make our delivery on time. Now we just have to find a replacement side for our truck because we honestly look like the Clampetts.

Where did they all come from?

So, a few days ago Anne put up a post about Chick-fil-A and her experience there and “Miss Mary”.  Somebody, somewhere has done something with that post (we think on Facebook) and our blog has exploded with new views.  We are talking in the thousands of new views.  I had sent a thank you for the staff to Chick-fil-A corporate so maybe that is where it is coming from.   Kind of crazy.  Whomever it was, thank you.  You probably never thought you would be reading about truck drivers.

$$$$…GULP…$$$$

So we are home for the week because the truck had a bunch of smallish problems.  I can call even expensive repairs smallish after the expense of replacing the engine last year.  Some of the problems were serious such as a coolant leak I could not identify and the oil pressure gauge was not working.  Both of those issues could kill the truck.  There was also a “clunk” when we turned the steering wheel hard at low speed and a small oil leak on the side of the engine and the emergency flasher switch was not working …and….and….and.

Like I said, mostly small stuff but it ran into the multiple thousands of dollars to fix.  The radiator needed to be replaced and the part alone was $1,160.  The really good news is that we can afford to fix the truck.  We just had an epic paycheck following an epic week.

I had breakfast this morning with Bill Hood who is the owner of Farm2Fleet.  Right after breakfast I ran over to the Volvo dealer to find out what was going on with the truck and that is when I got the bad news on the total.  After a bit of sticker shock I told them to fix our baby and said, “it is what it is”  I called Bill and his response was spot on, “at least you can afford the bill, you could be running for mileage at $1.30 a mile and have this repair bill”.  Since William was not feeling sorry for me I called Anne to break the bad news and what do you know, she said “at least we have the money and we can make it up quickly”  This from the people who call me optimistic.

We make a percentage of the the “line haul” so when rates are awesome like they are right now we can, by negotiating and running hot freight lanes, basically give ourselves a pretty sweet raise.  I really do feel sorry right now for Owner Operators that are leased on to companies that pay mileage.  They are getting $1,30 to $1.50 a mile and we are getting $3.00+ a mile.  These rates will probably not last but we can usually make well over $2.00 a mile anyway.  After running on a percentage, we will never work for mileage again.

Hopefully the truck will be ready to roll by Friday so we can get out over the weekend and be home for the 4th of July.

Chick-Fil-A at the Northgate Mall in Hixson, TN

I experienced a beautiful moment today at Chick-Fil-A at the Northgate Mall in Hixson, Tn. Shelby and I had gone shopping and decided to have lunch while there. We placed our order. An older woman with a walker was behind us. She stepped up to order while some of the crew helped her. Her name is Miss Mary and it seemed the entire staff knew her. She placed her order and I couldn’t help but watch. They escorted her to her table. Someone brought her her food and the entire time the staff conversed with her, calling her by name. It was such a wonderful experience. She was asking them questions and you could tell she knew them and they knew her. I was impressed with the care they took with her. Every employee that interacted with her called her by name and was incredibly respectful.
I don’t eat at Chick-Fil-A very often but I was blown away by what I saw and have a new respect for this location. It was such a beautiful exchange and my hats off to all the employees!
