Baby Truck Transport

Well, the truck is supposed to be fixed by this Friday.  Not really holding my breath as a dealer never delivers on time.  I suspect early next week JUST in time to be shut down for Thanksgiving.  Uggh.  We are putting in a used engine because we could not justify the $10,000 difference in a rebuild.  If the truck is ready I will probably go out on a shake down cruise solo.  A day out and a day back early next week to make sure everything is running OK.  We will then hit the road hard after Thanksgiving so we can start to rebuild our savings.  We have been down for seven whole weeks, five down really since we were in a rental truck for two weeks,  and really ready to get back to work.

So, Farm2Fleet took pity on us.  It MAY have been my incessant pitiful whining but I was going crazy not working.  So Bill put us in a rental car heading to Houston to pick up two straight trucks for the Expedited Division.  Expedited freight is a whole other world from what we do.  They are also called “Hot Shot” trucks.  Basically a 24 foot UHaul type truck with a full semi-truck sleeper attached.  Anne fell in love with the easy backing.  Spent the night each way in Louisiana and I LOVE cajun/creole food.  I will go very far out of the way for great gumbo.  Luckily it was less than a mile off the freeway 🙂  Crawfish Town in Breaux Bridge LA is just awesome.  We took the rental car down, loaded it into the back of one of the trucks and then drove them back to Chattanooga.  This was Anne’s first ever solo run (even though I was right in front of her).  It was a bit weird but it was kinda nice for me to get to drive the day shift.  Since we were driving as solo’s, we could not make the 820 mile run straight through and had to stop for the DOT mandated 10 hour break.  That is what would suck the most driving solo.  Even if you were just 50 miles short of home, you could not drive anymore if you were out of time.  We dropped the one truck then had to go to a towing company with a flatbed tow truck to get the rental car out then dropped the second truck.  We were supposed to do two round trips and pick up two more trucks but they are not ready.  We will do it if the truck is not fixed I guess.

We LOVE living in Chattanooga.  I am sure we will love it more when we have an income. 🙂

Veteran and his daughter in need of some help.

This should never happen to a Veteran on Veterans Day, or anyday for that matter.

He is a Navy Vet who works at the VA helping returning Vets and was moving across country from one VA hospital to another and had everything he owned in life in a U-Haul truck stolen from him in a ‘secure and guarded’ parking lot of the Airport Sheraton Hotel in San Antonio Texas. And amazingly enough the Sheraton’s – “armed guard saw nothing at all”

AND EVERYTHING THIS VET HAD IN LIFE WAS STOLEN ON VETERANS DAY!!!!

Do me a couple of big favors – hit this link http://www.customercare@starwoodhotels.com and tell the people at Sheraton that they need to make this right – that Veterans deserve more than to get ripped off on their property – under the watchful eyes of ‘their guards’ or you’ll never stay in their hotels again. And while you are at it toss an email to the Mayor of San Antonio mayorjuliancastro@sanantonio.gov and tell him to get his PD to find this Vets property or you’ll never visit his city.

This is an outrage that cannot stand.

Oh and share this with your friends and let’s show how much we care for those who fight for us and care for their fellow Vets that do.

I love our blog.

I love our blog. I love the people we have met through it, whether in person or online. It truly amazes me how helpful people are in this world. There are weeks I forget to write on here and there are times that I don’t think anyone really wants to hear what we have to say. Then someone reaches out or makes a comment and I realize that people do read what we write but also there are people who really care about us and what we are going through. I mean the good times and the bad times. I am sitting here in my living room while Craig is on the computer in the office. The puppies are sleeping on the couch and my daughter is in the shower belting out a song. Even with the uncertainty of our truck I realize how awesome life is. I mean seriously. There are avenues we are finding out about and hopefully in the next couple days we will have a solution. I am a little angry at the moment at the dealer so I am waiting a few days to calm down. If you don’t have something nice to say and all that. I may leave that blog to Craig but we will see. I just want to say thank you. Thank you to all of you who sent words of encouragement, emails regarding solutions and all the prayers and know that they truly make a difference. We love what we do. We love the travelling and visiting friends and family. Love using Yelp to find cool places to go and eat. Even with all the stress of the truck and everything I still love what we do. Craig and I have had some rocky paths the past few weeks. It’s hard not to bicker when you are unsure of your future. I do know that I wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else and it makes the good times that much better. Those that know us know we banter…. a lot. I can’t wait till we get back on the road and have cool things to write about instead of all this bs with truck repairs. That is just around the corner and I can’t wait. Just wish the truck was already fixed!! Grrrrr.

Wish I had some amazing news.

But I don’t. We are still in the process of getting the truck fixed. We went out in a rental for a couple weeks but had to return the truck. (found out the $3500 they were giving us was going towards the rental instead of the repair). Worldwide Equipment and Cummins have decided not to help us with the repairs. I really did think they were going to come through for us and it is a little bit of a shock that they aren’t. We have been told to go after them but honestly not sure it would do any good. The fuel pump sprung a leak and pumped diesel into the engine block, mixing with the oil. We have been told this is about the worst thing that can happen to the engine and it cannot be rebuilt. We actually need a new engine. Turns out we have a very big paper weight at the moment. We had an oil sample done in Sept which they say was clean. I don’t know how it could have been clean since I believe this has been happening since we got the truck. But it’s our word against theirs and they say this damage could have occurred in a month. Not sure I agree but then again I’m not a mechanic. Shocking that we owned the truck 110 days and had been broken down 30 of those. Then all the money we put into the truck and then finding out we need a new engine. Pretty heartbreaking but then thats trucking. If we had been running regularly and then this happened we would be okay but unfortunately we have never been able to run consistently. It’s going to cost $20,000 to have a used engine put in and $27,000 for a new engine. Just makes you sick thinking about that kind of money. Not sure what we are going to do yet but still working on the financing. We do have a loan we can get but truthfully its a blood sucking loan and I might get off cheaper by giving them my first and second born.
I keep trying to be positive. It’s amazing how many negative thoughts you can have in a day. Craig and I are always looking for the good and I know in the end it will all work out. It always does. I think of all the cliches, What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. What will be will be. What goes around comes around (hope that one doesn’t) but in the end its all about faith and believing in yourself. This first experience into owner/op has been interesting to say the least. But we have an incredible support team around us and Farm2Fleet is amazing. I hope our experience doesn’t turn you off of becoming an owner/op if that is what you want. I do hope that it helps in making informed decisions when you do make the plunge. We chose a bad truck. We thought we had done our due diligence but sometimes things just happen that are out of your control. How you handle them is what is important. I honestly know in my heart that things will work out for us and we will be back up and running. I don’t know what the lesson this is suppose to teach us but I know there is one. Or maybe it is to help someone else. LOL. Whatever it is I’ll be glad when we are back in our truck, running miles and posting all the fun things we usually get to do!!

Groundhog Day

Still not totally sure what we are going to do with the truck.  A lot of the “help” we were getting from the dealer has not materialized and we are debating saving $10,000 and putting in a used engine.  We rented a truck for the last couple of weeks so we could survive and it worked out fine but wow, did we miss our Volvo.  We got a Mack Pinnacle and although it ran great it was so small compared to our truck and had no inverter so no food or cooking in the truck (or coffee).  It also was a manual 10 speed and it took us a day or so to get back into shifting.  I like the automatic better I can tell you.  We got home on Friday.  I did anyway, Anne got home on Wednesday morning when I dropped her off on my way to South Carolina.  The last two weeks were pretty cool.  We got the rental on a Wednesday and were able to do a bunch of somewhat local expedited runs that paid well with very few miles.  We then grabbed a load to Tacoma Washington so we could be in Seattle for my Nephew’s wedding last weekend.  We had a blast with family and it really took our minds off all the crap we have been dealing with.  Then we got a load back that had three drops with the first near Knoxville and then South towards Atlanta and South Carolina so as we drove past Chattanooga we had Shelby meet us and grab Anne and Lil Bit.  So I was solo for two days.

I know how crazy this sounds but even though we are together ALL the time, I really miss Anne when we are apart.  The tiny bed in the Mack made the separation a little easier this time, however.  We spent the weekend home and helped out with orientation for a new group of drivers coming to Farm2Fleet.  Two new teams joining us on the road and we are pretty excited that one of the teams are friends of ours.  They started following this blog over two years ago and joined US Xpress.  We met them by chance a couple of years ago in Dallas and have always really liked them, just awesome people.  So nice to see them again this weekend and glad to have them in the F2F family.

I need to make some decisions today regarding the truck and get the actual repair process  moving forward.  We need to get back to work.

Everything Old Is New Again

Or it will be.

It turns out the truck engine is toast.  Even an in-frame (engine rebuild) is not enough.  The dealer took our engine apart to find out exactly what is wrong and the fuel in the oil has obviously been a long term problem.  The block needs to be replaced.  Kind of a big deal.  The total bill will be #27,000….gulp.  The dealer has really been awesome, or really crappy, we cannot decide.  They DID sell us a total lemon but they ARE doing everything they can to find a solution.  Of course, the best solution for us is if they would just offer to fix the truck for free.  That has not happened.  What they have done is significant, however.  The dealer has met with Volvo Corporate and Cummins.  Volvo is giving us $3500 towards the repair and we are waiting for an answer from Cummins.  The $27,000 includes tax and they are trying to find a way to classify it as a warranty repair which will save us $2500 in tax.  They dealer is also giving us a rental truck for free on Monday so we can get back to work.  The repair will take at least 2 weeks so that helps a lot.  Volvo finance is working on refinancing the truck to include the repair.

So, the good news is we will end up with a truck we love with a brand new engine that has a two year, 250,000 mile warranty and a payment we can still afford.  We will also be able to use our brand new turbo and the dpf filter we just put on our truck so that salvages $6000 in parts.  This is a business and it is all about cash flow and profit margins.  This is going to work.

I want to spend a minute talking about Worldwide Equipment in Chattanooga.  They are our Volvo dealer.  Joe, the General Manager, Johnny the Sales Manager and Glen the Service Manager have all been awesome.  They have invested in our success, worked together and they really do care about us.  Pretty awesome and they have bought our loyalty for the future.  When we are ready in a couple of years to buy a new truck, it will be at this dealership.

This has been a very hard couple of weeks and we are really excited to get back to work.  We are sure loving living in Chattanooga.  Had Jason, Anna and the grandkids over for dinner last night and it was so nice to see them.  It is kind of a victory when your child marries well.  We love being around these two and their kids.

Heading out to Rocktoberfest at Rock City tomorrow.  Should be a lot of fun and then we are off to work.

On to another chapter in our story.

Last week was by far the absolute worst week of our entire driving experience. Our truck has turned into a bucket of broken pieces and dripping oil. After having a new turbo put in and changing the 6th injector we headed on our way to Texas. We made it 80 miles from our delivery. We broke down near Houston Texas at 4 in the morning. Craig was able to get the truck to an off ramp and coast to a stop with just the back tires on the white line. Fuel in the oil AGAIN. We sat trying to decide what to do and waited. Knock on the door a little later and our neighborhood police are there. Then the sheriff arrived. We ended up calling to be towed and they showed up 4 hours later. Our tow guy turned out to be awesome. After much conversation of what to do we made the choice to be towed 800 miles home. The reason behind this was we didn’t want to damage the truck. We knew we wouldn’t make it back to Chattanooga and Charlie, the tow truck operator gave us some great news. He could tow us home and his company would deliver our load. Our insurance company is covering a majority of the cost. A very valuable lesson we learned. HAVE GOOD INSURANCE. This saved our butts. Especially after putting $6000 plus dollars into a truck that we can’t use.
We figured out that we have owned our truck for 110 days. We have been broken down for 30 of those days and dropped some dough into this girl. It has been incredibly frustrating and truthfully this past week I don’t think I’ve been that depressed in forever. I just felt that no matter what we did we were getting slammed, kicked and punched. We were trying to look for the silver lining but truthfully, there wasn’t one. I don’t know why things like this happen but if there is a lesson in here. I have no idea what it might be. What should have been an amazing experience for us turned into a nightmare. We kept thinking it had to get better. Once the regen would be fixed it would be smooth sailing. Unfortunately that just never happened. It is so frustrating to have been given this opportunity to buy the truck and have it turn out this way. But that’s life. That is the way it works out and we hopefully will learn something positive out of it all. Today I can feel a little more optimistic. We spent a couple days at home. Unpacking and meeting friends for lunch, cleaning up the house, hanging pictures and watching some football. We are healthy and happy. We have a wonderful life together, awesome kids and the Seahawks are kicking butt. Now if the Redskins were playing better I’d be way happier but you know life is good. (They beat Oakland thank goodness). You have to find the good sometimes but it is there somewhere. I always want to be looking for the positive. Even when you have to dig deep down for it, it is there. Life is so much more fun with a smile on your face!! We are also accepting positive thoughts and prayers today when we go to the dealer where we bought our truck. Keep your fingers and toes crossed they work with us regarding the truck.

HOME! It means a lot more this morning.

So, I started this post a few days ago and after the crap we have endured over the last 24 hours, I thought it would be nice to remember how awesome our lives are.  Cut to last Monday morning………………

After almost three years on the road, I am sitting in my living room this morning, cup of coffee (Tully’s French Roast, of course)in my hand, listening to Ingram Hill on Pandora and loving life.  When we hit the road on January 1st, 2011 we had just set Shelby up in an apartment that we were “sharing” with her so she could afford to live on her own and so we had a home base.  We did not get home to Colorado very often as no freight originates there so hard to get out.  When we went home for Labor Day we realized it was our first night home since March.  It never felt like our place at all.   Very glad we had decided to mover to Chattanooga.  I already posted about our first home hunt so I will continue.

So we decided to take the 3 bedroom apartment on the North Shore,  It is about 2 miles to town and that is the only thing not perfect about it.  I really wanted a place right in the heart of the city but this home fits us well.  Planning on buying two scooters and once we have those I think it will be very fun here.

We ended up running to Dallas, then to Little Rock and on to Denver.  I was just booking loads that paid well.  All that was left is we needed to get back to Chattanooga by the weekend to move in.  My son Jason had lined us up with five of his friends to help with the move and I had set the time for Saturday at 2:00 PM.  We got tot Denver early on Thursday morning with a Friday appointment.  The broker had said we could probably deliver early “just show up” she said.  We showed up at 8 AM and they told us to come back tomorrow.  So we sat at the TA in Commerce city for about 20 hours in the huge storm Colorado was getting.  I found a load for Friday morning and booked it only to get a call back from the broker a few minutes later that the shipper was flooded out.  So I found another load going to Georgia that delivered on Monday.  We got unloaded early Friday and headed up to Greeley to get our next load.  Roads and bridges closed everywhere.  We got loaded and had to head Northeast toward Nebraska to get out of Colorado.  We got out of the storm and headed “home”.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the Volvo dealer picked up the entire repair bill from the week before.  A huge relief.  Worldwide Equipment in Chattanooga are honorable people and we will happily buy our next truck there.  The repair, however, is problematic.  It seems we have a large exhaust leak since the repair.  The regen system is definitely working as when it goes into regen we can hardly breath.  Also, on Saturday morning as we were about 50 miles out of Chattanooga stopped at a rest area, one of the A/C lines broke.  So no A/C until we replace the line and get the system recharged.  We dropped the trailer, jumped in the F150 and headed over o sign the lease on the apartment. We now had a place to move our stuff into 🙂

The crew Jason lined up was just freaking awesome.  We got everything loaded into the apartment that we wanted to but there was a small problem.  We did not have storage for the crap we still need to go through and it was Saturday evening,  No way to fix this until Monday.  So with about 20% of the trailer still full we called it a day.  We got the apartment a bit together on Sunday morning then headed out to watch Anne’s Redskins get slaughtered.  I took a nap to rest up the the reality of prime time sports on the East Coast.  Sunday night football does not start here until 8:30 PM.  The Seahawk game was AWESOME.  My Hawks beat the Forty Whiners in a blowout.  The game did not get over until 1:00 Am.  I had Anne drop me off at the truck so I could make our two deliveries on Monday and she headed home.

Monday sucked for me.  I drove about 750 miles to make the two drops in 95 degree temps and high humidity with no A/C.  Beat the crap out of me.  Anne and Shelby worked on the apartment and when I got home it was pretty awesome.  Shelby turns 21 today so we went out last night at midnight to the Hair of the Dog pub downtown to celebrate.  I made sure we got there 15 minutes early so Shelby could watch Anne and I have a drink while she drank water.  lol.

We had a great day with Shelby for her birthday.  Started with Mimosa’s for breakfast, Champy’s for the worlds best fried chicken and 40oz beers (Jason, Anna and the grandkids joined us) and the owner of Champy’s bought Shelby a Forty to take home, then dinner at Community Pie where Bill, Lauren and Ryan from Farm2Fleet joined us for dinner and a few drinks and then off to The Honest Pint.  The night ended well with Jason coming late and Josia, who had helped us move, joined us also.  Shelby’s day was just about perfect.

Before we get to the birthday girls pictures, I need to tell a little story on Anne…

This morning, as we were cursing and praying and willing our truck to continue to limp into Salt Lake City.  I was driving and Anne was up front in the passenger seat.  Just before Park City Utah, as we rounded a corner, there was a dead animal on the side of the road.  It was on it’s side and all we could see was its back and the top of its head.  Anne exclaimed “That is one big ass rabbit”!!!!  In all fairness, the dead deer did have unusually large ears.  I laughed my ass off which, at that moment, I truly needed.  I said “Honey, I have never heard of a 175 pound rabbit.”  It was just way too cute…….blondes …smh

Ten Minutes until 21 and hanging with her evil parents (note the ice water for Shelby)

I am not finished crying yet.

Craig and I usually try to stay super positive and usually that is not a problem but last night my limit was reached. We have been broken down so much in the past two months that I don’t even know how to explain it. We love our truck but the Regen issue has been an ongoing problem since day one. We had Cummins fix it this last time and things were looking up. Seems to be working and I finally felt the dark cloud of truck repair hell was behind us. At least for a few weeks. After moving recently and truck repairs we haven’t been running as hard as we usually do. We absolutely love the new place and love living in Chattanooga. We were suppose to go to the CSU Alabama game this weekend in Tuscaloosa but due to our breakdown issues and finances we decided we had to run. Luckily we were able to stop in Cheyenne and watch the game. Then we hit the road heading to Hermiston Oregon. We made it to Rawlins WY and the truck started stalling and sputtering. We limped into a TA in Western Wyoming and their computers were down so they couldn’t diagnose the issue. We waited a few hours trying to figure out what to do. We ended up driving into Salt Lake City and here we sit.

The turbo on our truck needs to be replaced and will cost thousands. At first we thought it was the turbo actuator. I realize there are truck repairs and that is part of owning a truck. But this just tops off a few rough months. I know we will look back at this and laugh. But honestly at this minute I’m still trying to stop crying. It is just so overwhelming and we have worked so hard to have this happen. AGAIN. It is a different issue so I guess I should be grateful but truthfully couldn’t it have been a $100 fix. Then I could deal better with it.

Even though I am crying and things seem so overwhelming. Craig and I know that we can overcome this in a short time. Make a few good runs and we are back in business. We also realized today that we are exactly where we want to be and where we should be with Farm2Fleet. Today when we called the owner of the company on a Sunday afternoon. He answered the phone and was there for us. Not many companies out there where you can do that. We aren’t alone out here and that is a huge support system!!! We are blessed to have the people in our lives that we have. We are blessed to be part of a wonderful company. We are blessed because once the turbo is fixed our fuel mileage will improve drastically!!! I always try to stay positive and not be negative on here but this is one of those times that I need to let people know. SH*T happens and sometimes it’s good and sometimes it really sucks!

So I am feeling a little better this evening. We are sleeping in a bay at the Sapp Brothers truck stop since our truck is all torn apart. It’s cool out so we don’t need air conditioning and the truck should be fixed tomorrow so we can deliver our load and get our next one. I need to remember that things aren’t as bad as I think. We have a new house. We have the ability to make good money. And most important I get to do it with my best friend.

Out of the rain in Denver

Well, THAT was fun.  We just spent about 36 hours in Denver in the middle of that nasty storm.  The receiver would not accept our load early so we had to sit for about 20 hours at the TA truck stop in Commerce City.  Their power had gone down but was back up and they had lost internet so anything you wanted you could buy….if you had cash.  Oh, the atm’s were down too (no internet)  We just sat and read and watched the rain.  I had a load booked out but that place got flooded out so I had to find another.  We need to be in Chattanooga on Saturday to move into the new place so our load options were very limited.  It had to be a load delivering South or East of Chattanooga on Monday so we could stop and spend the weekend on the move.  I found a load delivering to two drops in Georgia so I grabbed it.  Does not pay great but better than running empty and us paying for all the fuel. Had to wind through the back roads of Colorado since I-25, the main North/South freeway was closed due to flooding.  Headed across Nebraska and we passed this.

Too cool, I would really love a Tesla.  Very cool load but still not as cool as live tigers, a lion and wolves. 🙂

Anyway, so nice to see sunshine again and looking forward to the new place in Chattanooga.`
