Perks

This was another post that wasn’t uploaded.

I love that we are able to see this beautiful country from corner to corner. Craig and I were talking this morning about how much we love our job. (Stopped in Fort Collins for a night with the kids and awesome breakfast.) That we are able to see family and friends.  But we are heading home for the holiday weekend
and incredibly happy that we live in Chattanooga. I love Chattanooga and it feels like home. We are truly blessed!!!
The past couple months have been a little rough due to freight prices. Things are beginning to look up so feeling really optimistic about the end of the year. We just broke down in Winnemucca NV. Craig was pulled over for a level 3 inspection. All that means is the officer wanted to see his logs and paperwork. When he went to start the truck nothing happened. We sat there for about 8 hours before the tow truck arrived. Word of advice to anyone looking into truck insurance. GET TOWING COVERAGE. It pays for itself if you ever get towed. Anyway turns out our starter went out again. Actually it’s the solenoid but on the Volvo you have to replace the whole starter. We just did it in May so we are hoping it will be covered under warranty. Oh and we had to replace 4 batteries lol. The price of trucking. But prior to this the truck had been running great and the only problem we’ve had was tires. We are heading home but we can’t turn the truck off. We need to get it to the shop or we will be stuck. Ahhh the joys of trucking.
The perks out weigh the bad though. Truly we love what we do because it lets us do what we love. See friends and family!!! The important things.

It Was All My Fault

Just found this in my draft folder as I forgot to post it from a couple of weeks ago.

So, we delivered in Mobile Alabama and looking for a load in this challenging environment.  Not a ton to choose from but we are thinking get towards home where we know we can make some money.  We call on a number of loads to Georgia and Tennessee but they are all gone before we call.  A load pops up to Atlanta from Mobile so I call quickly and book it.  A short run but paying a little over $2 a mile.  We get to the shipper and backed into the dock and I pull up the rate confirmation for the delivery address.  I am entering the address in the GPS and it says the road does not exist.  I am pulling up Google Maps to try to figure it out and I look at the rate con again.  It clearly says Atlanta TEXAS!  So, instead of heading home we are heading to a little town in the middle of nowhere.  I cannot believe I made this mistake but it will certainly not happen again.  The next day Anne was calling on a load to Nashville and she stopped the broker and said “Just to be sure, we are talking about Nashville TENNESSEE…..right?”  I laughed very hard.

Another Rough Weekend

I ran solo down to Tampa on Sunday then back to central Georgia then ran empty home.   We have decided that since rates suck we would rather sit at home waiting for a good load than be idling in the truck somewhere.   So,  I got back Monday night and had a nice relaxing evening and morning.   Then a load to Michigan hits the boards and we are off.  On the way to Michigan I found a load to Salt Lake City that paid well.   SLC is a terrible outbound market but we always follow the money.  We delivered Friday morning and a little panicked we stopped to fuel the truck when a team load to Tempe AZ hit the board.  Anne called on it and they offered $1000 for 650 miles.  Not good for a team but for SLC not awful.   I said no,  if you need a team you can pay $1200.  The broker said she can’t and we said sorry.   15 minutes later she called back and said if we were still available she would pay $1200.  Delivered early Saturday morning and then hanging out with Matiana and Brian  and their pool for the weekend.   What a great time.   Heading down to Tucson Sunday night for our pickup to Mobile Alabama.   Living the awesome life.

Yeah, Yeah, I Have Been Busy

Goofing off, mostly.

Life is good   I know it has been a while and so many times I have thought “I need to do an update” and it did not happen.  We are alive and well.

Personally this has been a pretty awesome summer.  We have spent lots of time with family, the weather has been great and the pools at home AND at my parents in Snohomish WA have felt perfect.  We finally made a couple of runs to California so got to see our son Tyler and Anne’s Brother and his amazing family.  We have been in Washington for the last week.  First for my Nephews wedding and then for a few days up in the beautiful San Juan Islands.  Maybe the most perfect place on the planet in the summer.  We went up with our good friends Kathi and Ken who we met in our second month (I think) trucking at a FedEx facility in Kansas City.  If you have read the whole blog you are familiar with them.  As weird as it may seem, we both had weddings to attend in little Snohomish WA on the same day.  They live in Buffalo, we live in Chattanooga, both about 2500 miles from Snohomish but here we were.  So much fun.

Now let’s talk business.  This has been a VERY challenging summer in the trucking world.  Rates are terrible and freight volumes are way down.  Summer is always a bit slower and we were spoiled last year with very good volume but the load boards are dead and it is taking a lot more work to make money.  The Seattle market is a complete black hole.  We have made it work when we got here two weeks ago by running down to Los Angeles at $1.00 a mile and back to Seattle at $3.00 a mile.  It is all about the average, not the individual load.  The battle cry in trucking is “Don’t haul cheap freight”. My personal belief is there is no such thing unless you get a low paying load INTO a bad market.  You do not run a cheap load into Seattle or Denver or New England or Florida.  You get your money going in to those markets and take whatever you can get to get out.  With the weekend coming up we have not decided what to do.  May grab one of those sweet one dollar per mile loads to LA to try and get a good team load on Friday or we may just suck it up at $1.50 to the midwest.   There are not a lot of loads on the board.  I have made a bunch of calls and sent emails to brokers and shippers we have worked with out of the Northwest and hoping one of them comes through.  Meanwhile, 94 degrees in Seattle today and I have a pool 15 feet away from my chair on the deck.  We will somehow survive.

The truck has been running very well.  The suspension problem is not really fixed. They did something hard to keep the cab from shifting but it has made the ride a bit too stiff.  Need to still work on that.

And an update to my update since it took me four days to post this.  We took a run to Los Angeles at a whopping $1.30 a mile.  Picked up Saturday morning delivering Monday morning so a very lazy two days. Hauling personal gear for the Singapore National Army from Fort Lewis to LAX.  It is mostly their duffel bags of personal gear but listed as “Airplane Parts” on the Bill of Lading.  Pretty cool group of soldiers.  Delivering in the morning and fingers crossed for a great team load out.

A few pictures from the last month or so.

A GREAT weekend with Kathi and Ken.

PLEASE be aware of your surroundings!!!!!

Today I had something happen and I didn’t do what I should have done.

I drove Craig to the truck so that he could go pick a load up in GA and bring it back to Chattanooga. We don’t have to deliver until 7am so the plan was to hang out at home until we had to leave. I dropped him off at the truck and was taking the puppies to the pet store. I had the top down and headed out. Its not the best part of town where we park the truck but its a secure lot and never really thought about it. As everyone knows I am a worrier but I didn’t have a care in the world today.

I pulled out and stopped at a light. I noticed a utility type truck behind me. I’m not sure why  I noticed the truck but I did. I drove about 10 miles and noticed the truck was still behind me. I thought that was a little odd. I went to get off at an exit and realized I should go to the next exit so I quickly changed lanes. I looked in my rearview mirror and the truck did the same.

At this point I’m getting a little worried but really was trying not to overreact. It was probably just a coincidence. From this point on I’m watching though. I’m thinking there is no way I’m  being followed. I had the wind visor up so I didn’t have an unobstructed view of the truck or the driver.  I got off at my exit and the truck exited with me. He isn’t directly behind me but in the next lane. Phew I think. Just a coincidence.  I make my turn and then my heart starts beating a little faster. He changes lanes and is back. At his point my heart is pounding. I’m near Hamilton Place Mall. Lots of people and I am trying to think what should I do. I should have called the police immediately  but there was a part of me that was thinking. No way this is NOT happening. Things like this don’t happen to people I know and definitely not to me. I decide to not go where I was planning and make a quick turn. I am driving fast at this point because he hasn’t made the corner yet.  I glance back and see the front of the truck. Yup making the turn. At this point I floor the car and dart around in the parking lot of a store and stop behind some bigger cars. He had followed  me for 12 miles and 4 rapid turns. I don’t know where he went from there. I saw him drive by and I hauled ass the opposite way.

My heart was in my throat and I’m still thinking there is no way this is happening. Why I didn’t I call the police I have no idea. I don’t think I was thinking properly. I did call the police later but there wasn’t anything they could do at that point.  I just kept thinking I was being paranoid. I wasn’t and I was lucky. Take the time to know what is happening around you. Think about it before it happens. In my mind I would have called the police immediately. I will if it ever happens again or even think it is. The police officer said it would be way better to have a conversation and be embarrassed then having something horrible happen. Trust your instincts. You know when something doesn’t feel right.

Be Aware. Especially as a woman driving alone. Whether you are out on the road, in town, or just running around the block. Things do happen to people everyday and I am blessed today that  I noticed the truck.

Family and Friends Matter

wpid-20150507_140453.jpg

Craig and I are blessed with the best of friends. Friends we’ve had since we were kids, high school. College, early married life, divorce, remarriage and trucking life. I love meeting new people and love my old peeps dearly. This past week two of my best friends came out from LA to visit. I cannot tell you how much fun we had. The second we are together it is like no time has past. We have been friends for over 20 years. We have been through thick and thin together.

Samantha and Lupe flew in to Chattanooga and the festivities began. We went to Ruby Falls to see the water fall, drove to Nashville to hit the honky tonk bars, ate out, cooked in and drank lots. Laughed even more. Blew glass balls and just had an amazing visit. It went way too fast and I am so grateful to have these two ladies in my life.

Katie my best friend from college was able to stop by on her way to Chicago. I miss her living in Atlanta but plan to visit her this summer in Chicago.

We have our nieces graduations in June which we are planning to be at. At least the graduation party.

Our nephew in getting married in July in Seattle which we of course will be attending.

We have not missed a major family event since we have been driving.

There are so many people we want to be able to visit with on the road. I wish I could spend a weekend with everyone but then I’d never be able to drive. But truly it is the thing about trucking that I love the most!!

Home Time Matters

We have been doing very well.  Two months since my last post.  We have a saying or slogan or motto (you pick) at Farm2Fleet  “SLACKERS UNITE!”  Boy, have we been living up to expectations.

Moving to Chattanooga two years ago was a great decision.  It was hard leaving Fort Collins Colorado for me but Anne had not lived there long so she really had no issue with pulling up stakes again.  The only real downside was my youngest son is going to Colorado State.  Luckily we have a job where we can see the people we love all the time.  Chattanooga really feels like home and we now have three of our kids living close and all of the grandkids.

A huge advantage for us is that we live in the epicenter for truck freight.  The Southeast is where it is at for trucking.  This allows us to spend so much more time at home and actually feel like regular people sometimes.  We are doing a dedicated run for a few days of auto parts that runs through Chattanooga so I dropped Anne off at home yesterday afternoon, drove the 270 miles round trip to make the delivery and pick up the return load, got back home at midnight, slept in my bed and we headed out at 8:30 AM to South Carolina to the other end of this route.  Thanks to Facebook, we are going to have lunch today with one of my very favorite people from High School.  Teri and her husband live very close to our delivery and we are meeting them.  Really looking forward to it.

The truck is doing well.  We have put about $20,000 into repairs and general maintenance so far this year.  That sounds like a crazy amount but it really isn’t.  We drive 15,000 to 25,000 miles a month.  A set of drive tires, all eight of them, costs about $5,000.  We finally think we have the cab suspension problem actually fixed.  It shifted over again a couple of weeks ago when I was out solo, we than ran for a week and decided we had to get it fixed.  I dropped the truck off on Monday and told them to do SOMETHING different.  They actually did so we are hoping it stays good.  We ran three very heavy loads in a row.  First to Vermont, then to Wisconsin and back to South Carolina and it stayed good so fingers crossed.

Memorial Day this next weekend so we will be home for three days and the pool in the Condo is OPEN.

Going to write a more detailed post later but the bouncing truck is annoying me.  Nap time!

Working Hard at Hardly Working

OK, not really.  We have actually been running as hard as we can but we keep getting unexpected breaks.

After we finished the UPS job, we got home on New Years Eve and we took the first three weeks of 2015 off.  We were not really planning on taking a bunch of time off but there were a number of maintenance issues with the truck.  We NEEDED to finally figure out what was causing the cab to shift, we needed to fix a hydraulic leak and a power steering leak and we needed to get the side fairing installed.  It turns out the cab shifting was being caused by the bushings on the front springs being totally worn out.  So we stood back and just started throwing money at the truck until it was magically fixed.  The last week of January we headed out to Seattle to watch the Super Bowl with family.  We ran some shorter runs out of Seattle to Denver and back and then after the game we ran to Twin Falls ID and back.  On the way to Idaho, we blew a hose in the cooling system in Hermiston Oregon.  We limped into the Freightliner dealer and they had to order a pre-formed hose so we were stuck for 24 hours and a few hundred dollars.

We also got some bad news.  There was oil in the coolant.  Not a huge surprise since we have suspected the oil cooler had been failing for a long time.  Going up steep inclines we have had to manage our oil temp by adjusting the RPM’s.  The part itself in not too expensive but the whole right side of the engine needs to be stripped off, the exhaust, turbo, air cleaner and a bunch of brackets and the cooling system also needed to be drained.  So, labor for the job is just stupid.  Well, the time has run out.  We got back home then booked a load to Jacksonville FL.  Two of the guys we worked with at UPS in Louisville were Big Mike and Little Mike, an awesome father and son.  Little Mike, (who is much bigger than Big Mike) also fixes all of his dad’s trucks and we could just tell we could trust him.  We dropped the truck off at Mikes and rented a car to hang out with our friends in Vero Beach (remember the Space Shuttle launch).  We had a very nice time with Mike and Brandi and then tooled on up the coast taking our time and sightseeing.  We fell in love with St Augustine.  The oldest city in America, we are going to plan a long getaway weekend there.  In St Augustine, I had the most amazing fried shrimp of my life at O’Steen’s.   Definitely getting back for this place and the great bar next door, The British Pub.   Our first day in Florida was awesome, in Vero Beach at 83 degrees., very nice.  After that it got cold and windy.  Not your typical Florida getaway.  Anyway……the repair job ended up taking four days until late Friday, so instead of being stuck in Jacksonville for the weekend where freight rates are generally sub-par, we decided to bite the bullet and just drive home empty. I drove over night and we got home about 8:30 am Saturday morning. Pretty much just settled in and got comfortable when at 10:30 my cell rings. It is a broker who is desperate to cover a load picking up today at 22:00 heading to Laredo TX. Must be a team. Well, the pickup is 300 miles away. I explain this to him and he tells me he will pay for the empty miles. We have a relationship with this guy so I did not want to burn any bridges. So I gave him a fair rate for a team, Saturday pickup and also explained that freight out of Laredo does not pay great so I would need him to add $500 to the total to help us get out of Laredo. He agreed so now our weekend home just became about 6 hours home. We did laundry, reloaded the food pantry on the truck, had a late lunch and headed to North Carolina.

At least it would be warm in Laredo. Hahahaha. 40 degrees and windy so let’s get out of here. We found a good load to Salt Lake City, hit a snow storm in New Mexico. When we got to SLC, it was 65 degrees and sunny. FINALLY.

We found a great team load to North Carolina, delivered and booked a team load out of South Hill VA going to Hurricane UT.  We got there but because of a huge storm the day before they could not load us.  They had us drop our trailer and they would call us the next day when loaded.  There was an awesome bar and grill a block from the Love’s Truck Stop. Great dinner and very fun locals. We like to sit at the bar for dinner so we meet people.  We got to St George on Monday morning and the Walmart Distribution Center informed us our appointment was for 6 am tomorrow. The broker agreed to pay us layover. So we went to the truck stop and called enterprise to come pick me up. We had a great Thai lunch, did laundry, some shopping and then another great, fun dinner at Georges Corner Restaurant & Pub. This is getting to be a good habit. Anyway, we made our delivery the next morning. We drove empty to Las Vegas and picked up a short load to Rancho Cucamonga CA.

Next up was an auto parts team load to Illinois. Love these loads, always light weight with great pay and expedited so we can deliver straight through.  Then one of our favorite brokers had a team load 55 miles away headed back to Tacoma WA delivering on Sunday afternoon.  We have been to this receiver before, they are on the waterfront and right across the street is a good seafood restaurant Johnny’s Dock.  Johnny’s has been there forever and can be kind of hit or miss on service but it was a gorgeous sunny day and my parents joined us on the deck for cocktails and lunch.  What a great time.

With Mom and Dad

With Mom and Dad

We thought we were parked for the night but a broker called asking if we could please take a load tonight from Tacoma to Reno.  I told him Reno sucked for freight so we would probably pass since there is good team freight out of Seattle/Tacoma right now.  He offered us over $4 a mile so we agreed since we could deliver straight through and then drive to Los Angeles to pick up a great load.  That all worked out and we headed from Carson CA to West Virginia (just over the bridge from Ohio) and then drove empty back to Indianapolis to get a team load going back to Tacoma.  We will never run that load again.  We picked up at midnight but did not get loaded and out until 3 am.  Saturday Morning, we than had to deliver by 4 pm on Sunday.  We HATE being stressed for time.  We made the delivery at 2:30 pm with a big sigh and ready to take a break tonight, head back to Johnnys Dock for dinner, see my parents and look for a load out in the morning.

You can see my previous post for what ACTUALLY happened.  🙂

The good news is we are doing great, the truck is running great and we are heading home next weekend after a full month on the road.  This is starting to look like real work.  Heading to the Mid-America Truck Show in Louisville KY in10 days. Redneck heaven but it should be fun.

I have a bottle of Gentleman Jack at home that is really missing me.

Never Say Never

I always say as a team we don’t do short runs but on a Sunday afternoon when a broker calls and offers me $8.85 a mile ($2,000) on a 226 mile run picking up now, 10 miles away and delivering straight through, you say yes.  Kinda like free money.

Revolving door of trucking friends.

I wrote this last year and never posted it. I think it is still relevant so here you go.

Today I was talking to my trainer Carl, who is still driving and training for USXpress. We’ve stayed in touch as I have with a few drivers over the years. I got to thinking about all the drivers we have befriended that just sort of disappeared. We would talk often and then not a word. It made me think about how transient our lifestyle is and how difficult this profession is. Carl and I were talking about how most drivers just drive, pick up, drop off, go to a truck stop, eat, sleep and start it all over the next day. I was asking about past trainees he has had. How many are no longer driving because it can be so hard out here. But thinking back over the people we were friends with is just odd. I have friends that I have been friends with forever. As does Craig. We all live in different states but can pick up the phone and call any of them. It would be like we just talked. We pick up right where we left off and we are blessed to have these people in our lives.
Drivers can be another breed. There are ones that I feel are good friends. Ones we go on vacation with. Ones that you are cordial with. Ones that we have never met that know us through this blog. Craig and I love helping people and telling our story. But Craig was telling me how it’s the same on The Truckers Forum. There are people who are there all the time and then they vanish. Makes you wonder where they went. Are they ok? Had they just had enough?
I love the friends I have made through trucking. They are a cool bunch of peeps. There are the ones I talk to daily or weekly or monthly. Not all of them vanish and I realize its a weird topic but it makes me wonder where they went and what happened.
