It Always Works Out

Seattle is a tough market for freight most of the time.  Fall, when apples and Christmas trees are running is the only exception.   January is by far the slowest time in trucking.  Rates are depressed and very few loads.  We decided we wanted to be in Seattle (my home town) to watch the Seahawks crush the Patriots in the Super Bowl with friends and family.

We got an ok paying, light weight load from Salt Lake City to Seattle that delivered on Tuesday morning.  Since we have not worked much this month we wanted to make a bit more before the weekend.

Available loads sucked.  This was especially true since we needed to stay in the West to get back to Seattle.   After a ton of calls on awful loads paying diddly,  we found a load the next morning to Denver and a return load on Thursday to Seattle.  Denver is another freight black hole but you can usually find decent freight to Seattle from there because nobody wants to go from one dead freight zone to another.

I was totally stoked because we could stop in Fort Collins on Wednesday and see my youngest son who plays football for Colorado State University.  Have not seen him in months.   I sent him a text and made plans.

Talk about bummed.   The biggest problem with working seven days a week is you lose track of what day it is.   I thought it was Monday, picking up Tuesday, so we would have an extra day in the schedule but the pickup was Wednesday.  Total turn and burn trip.   Overnight to Denver them overnight to Seattle for a Friday afternoon delivery.   Very disappointed but we will make sure our load out of Seattle next week takes us through Denver to see my son.
Our load to Denver was bulk coffee beans and it is always nice how the trailer smells after a coffee run.  Another major disappointment.   Green,  unroasted coffee smells horrible.   The place we delivered, where they roast the beans, smelled great however.

Looking forward to Russell Wilson beating Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in back to back Super Bowls.

Something fun

We haul all kinds of weird stuff but this may be the messiest that didn’t bother me.   We were in Phoenix and booked a load for the people who put on “The Color Run”.  Picking up all the material at Tempe Beach Park after the race had concluded.   What a mess.   Glitter literally filling the air and I got bright pink and green corn starch all over my #Seahawks Russell Wilson jersey.   Great people and a lot of fun.  They promised they would clean our trailer out at the delivery to their headquarters in Salt Lake City.
Kinda cool thing happened that was also a first.   Tyler, the broker we had gotten the load from, lives in Phoenix and stopped by while we were getting loaded.  We run a lot of loads for this firm and have always had a great relationship but as a driver, face to face is very rare.   Great guy.
Being we spent the night in the valley of the sun we also got a chance to have dinner at our favorite pizza joint (Oregano’s) with Bill and Chelsea.   The couple who got married here last October.   Great time with them.
Heading North to SLC the route is mostly back roads up past the East end of the Grand Canyon.   We REALLY need to make this run again in the daytime.
Getting an oil change right now then deliver in the morning then off to Seattle.  Planning on staying near the West Coast for the week to watch the Seahawks whoop up on the Patriots with friends and family in Seattle.

Working for a living

Again…….

Well, after the regular bumps and bruises of being an owner operator, we are finally back on the road.   Thousands of dollars in “minor” repairs and maintenance later. I could bore you with the details but we are hitting the road about two weeks later than planned.   It was an awesome time at home.  Lots of time with the kids and grandkids and a couple of AMAZING #Seahawks wins later we are working or way towards Seattle to watch the Super Bowl with family.

We had to bobtail 250 freaking miles to Jackson TN to pick up our beautiful brand new trailer.  We debated getting a refer trailer but after much thought decided against it.

Picked up our load of furniture in Mississippi and stopped at the pilot truck stop to remove a clogged filter and it happened again.   There I am with my hands covered in grease and this guy walks up and says “excuse me, is your name Craig?”  For I think the seventh time since we started this blog somebody recognized either Anne or Me in a random place.

So Hi Jamie! It was very nice meeting you.   I wish we had the time to talk.   Drop me an email.  I would love to hear your story.

Away we go…….

Whew…. We have been out of the loop for a long time.  For the last couple of months we agreed to a contract to provide outside services to UPS.  Last year UPS got slammed mostly due to all of the huge winter storms and suffered a huge hit when they did not get all of your Christmas packages to you on time.  They were determined it was not going to happen again so for the first time ever, they brought in outside drivers to help out at the UPS Worldport in Louisville Kentucky.  This place is amazing.  Over 160 UPS planes land, get unloaded, get reloaded and take off every day.  Anne and I drove what we have always referred to as “Yard Dogs”, UPS calls them “Yard Birds” and “Shifters”.  They are short, 2 axle vehicles that are used to move trailers around at manufacturers and shipping facilities.  They are very maneuverable and they have a hydraulic fifth wheel arm to raise the trailers so you do not have to raise or lower the landing gear.  The big news is……ANNE LEARNED HOW TO BACK A TRAILER!!!!!  After 7 weeks of backing trailers into very tight spots she is a pro.   Our job was to take the inbound trailers from over the road drivers and drive them to the other end of the airport where they would be put on a door at “The Core” where everything is sorted and some put on airplanes and some put back on trailers which we would then haul back to the other side of the airport for outbound trucks.  We lived in an extended stay hotel so we had a full kitchen and a separate bedroom.  We worked Monday thru Friday 10 hours a day.  It was so weird having weekends off.  We took advantage of it though by doing some sightseeing.  Favorite thing was probably the Jim Beam Distillery Tour.  It was very hands on and a lot of fun.  We even bottled our own Single Barrel Knob Creek Bourbon which they engraved for free when we bought the bottle.

Farm2Fleet really stepped up to the plate with a great Christmas dinner for the F2F team working the UPS project.  Bill and Lauren along with Ryan and Lili came up for Christmas day and took us all out to dinner.  A great time.  We then hung out in Louisville for a couple of evenings with them.  What a great town.

We are planning on doing the same gig next year if they offer it and, Anne was so wonderful, how could they not. We made great friends at UPS and really hope it works out again.

I spent about 4 hours getting the truck started today.  Turns out you cannot leave a truck for two months and expect the batteries to hold a charge.  I had to take all of the wiring off and clean it and then jump the truck.  Finally got it started and drove it to the Volvo dealer to see if they can figure out ….again…….why the cab suspension keeps going out.  Hope to get out by the end of the week but we will see.

Really enjoying hanging with the kids and grandkids but I guess it is time to go to work.  Driving the 10 miles to the dealer today felt really good.|

Biggest Perk

The biggest perk of driving a truck is seeing family and friends. This week we made a delivery to Washington DC. After we were unloaded my dad came and picked us up. We went to a wonderful restaurant in Alexandria and that is truly what makes this the best job in the world. Planning a longer visit this spring but this is my favorite part of driving.

I am so sick of moving.

I am never ever moving myself ever ever again. We moved into a new condo last month. This month Aleena and Shelby moved out of the old apartment. We still had some stuff there and today went over to get it out. Didn’t think it was that much stuff but I swear it multiplied while we were gone. I rented a truck and Tyler and I headed over. Thank god Tyler is in town or I don’t know what we would have done. The girls I think need some lessons in moving. Number on is that things need to be packed in boxes prior to moving. I am just going to leave it at that. I will admit I had a ROYAL meltdown. Tyler, Shelby, Aleena and I all got to work packing the truck. We did get the big things moved to Shelby’s new place, which is very cute!! We got the rest of the big things of ours over to the condo and tomorrow we get to move the rest to storage. During this Craig has been out solo. He is the smart man. Oh my God it has been a royal pain in the ass. Excuse my french but moving is one of the WORST experiences in life. Once we finish moving the rest of the stuff to storage we have to clean the apartment. That is probably the easiest part of the day. We all feel ancient and covered in bruises. I seriously can’t wait to get back to work. It is way easier than moving!!!!
Now on to the good part of moving. I love our house. We have a condo overlooking the river. A huge balcony and a great house to entertain in. I am writing this as a fire is burning in our wood burning fireplace. Craig will be back home tonight and we will be home for our granddaughters first birthday this weekend. My lovely love nest has a couple extra birds at the moment. Both Tyler and Aleena are staying at the condo until a job opportunity starts. Originally it was only delayed for a week but now it is a few weeks. We will explain more once it happens but it is definitely cozy at the moment. But that is what family is all about.

Great Timing

So we went to a wedding in Scottsdale Arizona a week and a half ago.  What an amazing long weekend.  I will let Anne post about that but we headed out on Monday looking for a load.  I found a great load out of Columbia City Oregon paying great money to New Hampshire for Wednesday so I put a couple of loads together to get us to the Portland Oregon area in time.  We drove down to Nogales AZ to pick up a load to Union City CA (The Bay Area), delivered on Tuesday morning and had a load picking up a mile away going to Vancouver WA.  Delivered Wednesday morning and picked up our load of wood pellets for pellet wood stoves heading to a Home Depot in Northern New Hampshire.  3,200 miles which is just under our longest run ever of 3,300 miles from Seattle to Fort Lauderdale a few years ago.  We missed the peak leaves in New Hampshire by about a week but it was still stunning.  We delivered on Saturday morning to the Home Depot store and added our 21 pallets of pellets to the 990 pallets of pellets they had on hand.  They told me they are selling over 200 pallets a day.  Winter is coming!

I thought it was going to be tough getting out since freight out of the NE pretty much sucks and weekends are totally dead.  The plan was to find a short hop back to Pennsylvania to set us up for a good load on Monday since for once, PA freight is paying great.  We always seem to stumble into a good load however.  I had posted our truck as available on the load board and got a call from a broker first thing Saturday offering a load from the Maine border right back to Nagales AZ where we had started our week.  Well, it worked out fine the first time, let’s give it another shot.  Super light expedited load of foam rubber auto parts.  Only 5,200 pounds which beat the heck out of the 44,000 pound load we had hauled into NH.  On the way to pick up the load we passed an awesome looking seafood restaurant that looked like we could get the truck in behind.  I checked it out on Yelp and the had lots of reviews and 4 stars.  We had a plan.  They were open until 9 pm so we hurried and got there just after 8 for Lobster rolls and clam chowder.  Totally worth the effort as this food just rocked.

As we got close to Dallas the broker called and asked us to stop at an executive airport in Fort Worth to unload three of the pallets so they could put them on a plane.  I sicced Jeff, one of the awesome dispatchers at Farm2Fleet on getting us a new rate confirmation.  Jeff got us an extra $250 for the stop.  Pretty sweet.

Delivered in Nogales yesterday with  our drop right up against the fence on the Mexican Border.  If I had backed up 50 feet it would have been an International Incident.  With an eight day total of 7,700 miles I decided I wanted to find a way to make my sons football game.  It is the Border War with Colorado State taking on Wyoming.  Figured if we could get to Seattle by Thursday our good freight source there could get us back to Nashville (they always come through)  I sent them an email and they said “Sure”. So we went to work looking for loads.  Not easy out of Arizona.  We put together a load to Reno and then a load from Reno to Edmonds WA.  As we were loading in Arizona the guy with the second load called and told us he had lost it.  So we went back to work.  I found a 2 stop load picking up in Reno with a drop in Portland OR and final in Tacoma WA.  Done!  The sweet part is we actually ended up making about $500 more on this load.  Unloading in the tiny town of Yerington NV right now.  I will update after the Rams crush the Cowgirls.

What a fabulous week.

It has been a fabulous week. We spent last weekend in Boise at CJ’s football game. Craig, Myrna and I drove back to Chattanooga while Al did some work and then met us in Chattanooga. We were swapping cars and they drove the one down from Seattle and are taking our car back. We had a wonderful visit with Jason, Anna and the kids. This was the first time Myrna and Al had met their great granddaughters. We also got to celebrate Shelby’s birthday since we will be back on the road next week and will miss her birthday.
We also found a new home. I am about to have a fit regarding the parking at our apt. You can never find a spot and honestly I don’t want to live with a bunch of college kids. Except the ones I can’t get rid of LOL. Actually Craig and I will be living by ourselves for the first time in our married life. We found a great condo over by the river and found out today that it is ours. I will be sending Craig out solo so I can pack and move. He can just come home to a new place LOL.
Really excited to move!!!!
